Frost do a black 'coating' like anodising for steel. I have no experience of it.

Good tip, will have a look when I've looked ta the V8 Sportster project... I wish I had the space and £'s for that!

Try “black wheel nut covers” on eBay I have no personal experience with them.

They look like new. What sort of price were they for each wheel? I have 5 original Marina alloys that need doing, was going to do them myself but as far as I have got is having the tyres removed when I had new ones on my van.

There were £50 each, blasted, checked for cracks and damage, tidied up, then powder coated. Tyres are Falcon's £45 each. Slightly annoying that their wheel balancer wouldn't do 13" wheels!

Regardless, they look good, look to be a nice refurb.

I've been trying to find black wheel nuts, none yet, or stainless with at least aren't chrome. I may well try spraying my old set black, I know it'll come off first use of the wheel brace but then I can touch up!

Otherwise, yes next option was to try and get the new chrome ones anodised.

Got the wheels back, I still need to get them balanced but a trial fit looks good.

Thanks Ben, I wonder who actually does the work? The guys I’m talking to are saying they do the dis and reassembly after testing and machining. So this looks like the going rate then!

It is a lot of money, but I have 3 quotes now all similar amounts to drive the car in, get it stripped down, engine and box rebuilt and then put back together. £2k is labour which sounds reasonable for the London area(it’s expensive down here!), £3k for the engine, the rest is consumables, clutch, and then the dreaded VAT bumps it up a lot.

I do agree with you that it’s probably not as important to keep the original engine as it is to get the car out and about, seen and used but I wanted to ask for opinions.

So bearing that in mind IF I was to spend £8 I’d spend £10 and go electric! A 115 hp/179 lbft motor, controller and 3 sets of Tesla batteries come in around that money and it will be a lot cheaper to run with no tax, low insurance, and no more worry about fuel and ignition systems or overheating in traffic.

I’m about to be ready to start driving it so will see how the motor behaves and how much it’s knocking and smoking after a few miles.

£8K is a ridiculous amount of money. Who is quoting for the rebuild? Aston Martin?

Now, I'm most probably going to upset all the "purist's" here and to those well so be it, but you have to consider whats important here. Is it really all about keeping the car in its absolute original condition, regardless of expense, just so its got "matching numbers"?

Ha, "matching numbers" on a kit car, now that's an oxymoron if I ever heard one. Or is it to approach this from the direction it was created? Using creative thinking and ingenuity to keep it on the road, available to be enjoyed, driven and to go to various shows/meets where people can see the foundation of the Marlin brand; and the fact that even this car has to continue to evolve to survive should serve as an inspiration and not be viewed as a negative.

You need to consider what is the best approach for you, that will allow you to continue to enjoy both owning and "using" the car. If that means a different engine etc, so be it, Its the route I would take. I bet you any money that's what Paul Moorhouse would have done, and even if he had the car would still be relevant.

One option would be to lay up the original engine and gearbox for (much) later and fit a newer one to use.
