Air Filter

Have just bought a Roadster with Fiat 1600 twin cam in it.Air filter is past its best and very small- Any ideas on a larger one with out making a hole in bonnet ? Space is very limited. All help greatfuly received as Im cutting up all of my wife's food storage boxes in an attempt to mock up a prototype ! Martin

K&N filters is a good place to start,try their website or e mail them with carb type ,power rating of engine and your max dimensions.Have found them helpful in the past.Oh and in answer to Don-they are useful if you don't wish to rebuild your engine every few thousand miles cos' all that sh---has worn your cylinder bores !!!

Hi Martin,
I've got a Pipercross PX3000 filter on my Fiat TC engine and mine is 2litre so is taller than yours. They do a blank back plate for this one so you can fit it to your carb - i don't know what carb you've got on the 1600. The PX is wide & shallow with rounded shoulders so should fit under the bonnet.
Try Trackstore - don't know any phone details as it's not on their invoice!

Thanks Alan & Pete I will try K&N and the PX 3000 sounds good. Don I want an air filter as Im going Trialing with my Roadster- Lands end here we come ! Martin.

Hello Martin,

Congratulations on the new Marlin with the twin cam! The 1585 is a great engine, and you should have lots of awesome motoring ahead.

I'm using the same somewhat unknown filter now as when I first started with the car, even after rebuilding the engine last summer... I just replace the elemnts.

Why? Well, as good part of the reason is that the bonnet lid is specilally modified with a bulge to clear this certain filter application. The bulge is actually not unsightly at all, as it is quite obscured by the spare wheel.

The engine in my car is fitted particularly far back in the engine bay, so that is where the stock fiat carb is. (better weight distribution, I suppose....)

Have ordered a PX 300 and a blanc base plate. The people at Pipercross were very helpful- Thanks Pete.
Ty did you have a problem getting parts for an engine rebuild ? Martin.

Hi Martin,
I used some ordinary 1/2" plumbing fittings to fix the crankcase breather pipe into the base plate, inside the filter so my engine now breathes and consumes any oil smoke direct from the crankcase. The oil trap on the side of the engine catches most but I find this better than letting it escape into the engine compartment.

Parts availability isn't too much of a problem, but it is not nearly as inexpensive as sourcing parts for a more mainstream engine. Guy Croft (www.guy-croft.com) is a great resource. Parts sourced from Guy are not cheap, but are of very high quality, as he is primarily a race engine builder. There are a few fiat specialists around as well, like Avanti (www.avanti-motorsport.com), but I'll confess that I've never bought any parts from them. Most bits can still be ordered through normal dealers, though.

If you search these forums for my posts (search for miller) I've got links to various fiat twin cam bits, etc.

Pete, Pipercross PX 300 arrived with blank base plate. Have fitted and it just fits under bonnet and car runs much better. Thanks for info. Martin

I'm glad it all fitted ok. Warning - the heat under my bonnet melted the glue that holds the Pipercross badge in place and I found it melted between the cam boxes - messy! Other than that, not only are they effective but they look great as well don't they? Pete
