  • Sportster steering rack

I have a Ford based Sportster with Rover V8. The steering rack is quite "slow" with 3.5 turns lock to lock. I know Marlin made their own rack for the Sportster, but does anyone know which actual rack and pinion it uses internally? Is it Sierra or Cortina maybe?
    Thanks Chris.

I don't know which rack it is, I suspect Ford. I have a BMW E30 based kit, its defo not the BMW rack. I had to send the rack back as it was way too wide when first sent to me. I think they just chopped the tie rods and added some extra thread. So the customisation is going to be in the tie rod lengths rather than anything else. It's been nearly 18 years though so I've only got the notes on my website about it, rather than an actual memory!

If my memory serves me correctly, the Sportster used a Ford rack from the P100 (Pickup?). At the time I was building mine there were questions about how many turns it was from lock to lock. I think the conclusion was for anything better it would have to be a custom made rack.
Mind you, the steering was very heavy at slow speeds as it was. Any less turns would have made it worse...

      Cheers, Robin
