  • Cherry Bomb exhaust

    Hi

Has anyone fitted a Cherry Bomb Exhaust to a 1.3 Marina based roadster.

If so what does it sound like?

Cherry Bombs are only good for one thing... making a lot of noise!

Not the same engine, but I've used straight through type resonators/back boxes on a BMW M20 with an equal length header, x pipe and twin run to the back. The smallest Jetex's as resonators combined magnaflow back boxes, they were loud an only just passed SVA with two of the 4 holes plugged.

I've since switched to Varex X-Force back boxes and no resonators. They're also a straight through design but have a valve to close off the straight through bit which gives you the choice of ear bleeding or reasonable.

I fitted a very similar thing to my 1.3 Roadster way back when the original box failed. Being side exit it made one hell of a noise. On one occasion I had to go uphill through a village past a row of parked cars and I set off at least two alarms. Needless to say it went in the bin and was replaced by the stainless hybrid box that was supplied at the time by YKC. As far as I know it was still on the car nearly 30 years later.

Thank you all for your advice, I won't be going for the Cherry Bomb.

Flowmaster Chambered Mufflers have a good reputation in the US, I'm not sure on UK availability but something similar might be out there. I think the jetex ones are mostly straight through glass packs - but you can get bigger ones that do more sound damping than the little tiny cherry bomb style ones and still flow very well.

Straight through silencers fitted on a side exhaust are always noisy especially going uphill. JRR fitted with a Triumph 6 cylinder used to howl but it was a beautiful sound. With an exhaust which exits at the back it is not so bad apart from pulling a caravan uphill with Gwynevere when alarms would certainly be set off.
Mk 1 Sprites had a tiny straight through silencer and they certainly made plenty of noise. They always seemed to be travelling faster than they really were!

Back in the days when you could tell the car by the sound of its exhaust note!!
