    Wiper Wheel Boxes

    Hi,
Does anyone know where I can get replacement wiper wheel boxes from, either new old stock or new, not used. I have searched all the usual places and there are plenty about but not the correct ones and there are none for a Morris Marina!
I am overhauling the wiper mechanism due to slow wiper speed and while I am at it I thought that I would replace the wheel boxes as the splines don’t look too good. They are obviously Lucas and the number stamped on them is 72851A and they have 22 teeth unlike most of the ones available, i.e, Mini etc. which have 32 teeth. The shaft length is 46mm including the splines and the diameter is 16mm.
    Many thanks,
    Chris

Mine have always been slow on the first speed but reasonable on the faster speed. I suspect that mine originated from a classic mini.
Nevertheless they work sufficiently ok. I had cleaned up the motor brushes, lubricated the end motor bush and also lubricated the cable linkage with chain spray ( liquid grease) before recomissioning the car.

Hi Chris, Can't help with new old stock but I should have a pair of old somewhere. Replaced those on my old Roadster with Allegro as teeth variation gave a better sweep -but should add that that it's only one of the allegro ones [ can't remember which side!] as the other is same as Marina. Guess from your post you've tried SVC , ANG and MEV spares.

Thanks for the reply. I did strip the motor down as I suspected that the brushes were worn, so I replaced everything inside that I could, as spares were readily available. However, the wipers were still running painfully slow and even though the motor was securely strapped in place , it was moving about quite considerably. Since then, I have stripped all the rack down , removing all the old grease and also from inside the bundy tube and given everything a good clean but before I rebuild everything and Sikaflex the scuttle in place, I think it would be sensible to try and replace the wheel boxes.

I was lucky when replacing mine and found some second hand on Ebay.
Have you tried Car Builder Solutions? They do a generic wheel box which may (or may not) fit.

Hi Andrew, I must have pressed send on my previous message just as you were posting yours! Many thanks for your reply. Yes, I have tried all the usual avenues including fleabay but I will keep searching for now. I will let you know how my search goes and if it’s okay with you I may take you up on your offer.
            Regards,
            Chris

I have spoken to CBS and their 50mm wiper wheel boxes have 32 teeth, so I don’t know if I would have to replace the inner cable too. The other option is to replace the whole system which they can supply but that would be a last resort.!

By the way, I added a braided earth strap from one of the clamp bolts to the metal frame. I found that speeded them up slightly as the motor does draw a high current. The screen also needs to be wet when using.

Chris, I didn't have any issues with the inner cable when changing the wheelboxes .

My car is not on the road yet - and Marina parts are non existent here (NZ) so I bought a wiper motor "set" from

Australian Rod & Custom Components - The Hot Rod People (partsforhotrods.com.au)

I suspect that there are Hot Rod suppliers in the UK that would be worth a look
