Yes you are missing something! You have to push the gear lever down (or up - I don't remember) to clear the reverse gear indent plate which is there to stop you accidentally selecting reverse.

If my memory serves me right reverse is engaged with a swift slap on the gearstick. On top of the gearbox (this is accessible from underneath the vehicle) there are two bolts, one with a cable coming out of it (the reverse sensor) and another. This is the one you need to take out, BEWARE THERE IS A SPRING AND A METAL BALL IN IT, you need to put some grease in this and reassemble the bolt. If that doesn't work it could be that the sensor bolt has stuck as well. Use the same process on that and hopefully all will be well. Adrian

The gearstick on a 1.8 , has to be lifted at the same time that you move it forwards and across to the right. There is a lift plate fitted to the gearbox that is designed tor restrict a protruding bit at the bottom of the gearstick from being moved to reverse gear without lifting first.

Otherwise you will accidentally be selecting reverse gear when trying to select 3rd gear as they are both in the same direction.

I was referring to an MGB 1.8, the Marina 1.8 may have a different gearbox?
