So, my Fiat Twin Cam engine developed an oil leak and the underside of the car was coated in oil, not such a bad thing for protecting the chassis but not good for the engine, so I have bitten the bullet and removed the engine and gearbox in order to investigate!
The usual suspects i.e the rear crank oil seal was not the issue but I did discover that the rubber seal for the dipstick had perished, which may be the root cause of the leak. However, I was also getting oil running down the exhaust manifold threads! I was also down on compression on the number two piston, so it definitely needed to come out.
Head has been stripped and rebuilt with new valves, guides, seals and a re-skim. Whilst the engine block is away being completely rebuilt by Middle Barton Garage.
I have stripped the gearbox, cleaned and painted it and replaced the speedo drive, reversing light switch, return spring, release bearing, and a brand new clutch. I have also modified the gearbox mounting bracket and added beefier rubber mounts as I found that the original ones that I installed many years ago had perished and the gearbox was just floating about!
next step is to thoroughly clean and degrease the chassis and transmission tunnel, then give it all a lick of new paint before hopefully getting it all back together again but probably not before the end of the year!
