In the early 124 the thermostat was built into the cyl head outlet so there was only the one pipe. See ebay item 220098772368 for an example. This is the best answer but as you can see from ebay that they are expensive and very difficult to find. So the answer is to block off one of the 2 outlets from the cylinder head T pipe. Fit a thermostat, some say drill a 3mm hole in it, and jobs done. The 'stat goes in the cylinder head so you do need to remove the outlet T. The head casting was never changed so there is a shoulder to fit the stat in to. Most stats are universal in diameter so just buy one that has the right temp for opening. Hope this helps.

Hi Dave,

As Jon suggests, the mod is really straightforward and works very well.

The only tricky bit is plugging off one end of the "T" fitting, but this is actually quite simple too. A trick I learned from Guy Croft:

1) Find a core plug just a bit smaller than the hole to be blocked and place it on a plastic bag on a flat surface.
2) Centre the fitting over the plug.
3) Drop in a good few cc's of Araldite over the plug.

Works fine, and very inexpensive to sort out.

I've attached some photos of the fitting, and of the fitted conversion in my engine bay.
