  • MGB engine to Marina Gearbox

Seeing as Marina engines have gone the way of rocking horse manure and hens teeth, it looks as though the best route out of my troubles is to buy an MGB engine.

Does anyone know how difficult this is to fit to aa Marina Clutch and gearbox.

Will the Marina flywheel bolt on to the MGB crank? and What about the spigot bearing?

You'll need to change the engine front and rear plates from the marina unit on to the mgb engine if you are retaining the marina box.Think you also need to use the flywheel and clutch assy from the marina engine as well as the spigot bearing. If you were to go for MGB engine AND it's box it would probably require modification to the transmission tunnel and a MGB clutch master cylinder to replace the marina one as you will end up with insufficient travel at the slave cylinder otherwise. There are loads of options depending on your finances,MGB engine to Ford 5 speed type 9 being just one or just switch to pinto and 5 speed

Thanks Alan but working to a small (negative actually) budget, just to get car on road. MGB engines are more plentiful than MGB ones and are thus easier to obtain. My concern was about the crank end and how different it was from the Marina one. Everything is ok if Marina flywheel bolts on. does anyone know if the bolt pattern is the same? I assumed that I would have to change the backplate to mate with the bell housing. I know that the MGB spigot is bigger but the spigot bearing can be dealt with.

MGB had smaller flywheel than Marina but my info is that you can fit the marina one on to a mgb engine/crank.The crankshaft in the marina is made of a cheaper material than MGB which is forged from EN16 steel. The other difference in the engines is the MGB uses a duplex timing chain where the Marina has a single row

I can confirm Alan's advice. I have fitted a MGB engine to my Marlin. It was not too difficult. The Marina flywheel bolts straight onto the MGB crank. I changed the spigot bearing with a special tool involving a bolt a socket and a washer filed oval. Tony

Easy way to get a spigot bush out is to fill it with grease then hammer a close fit bolt into it. The grease then pushes the bush out.
Ben Caswell probably not the last word on anything here!!

Thanks everybody. I had seen the ebay items they were what prompted me to ask, there is also a fiat twin cam plus gearbox on at the mo as well, don't all rush.

I have done the trick with the grease before.

I'm interested that the grease trick has worked for someone. I had come to believe it was an urban myth. I tried an awful lot of hammering and got nowhere hence the fiendish special tool which had the bush out in a trice. But whatever works is fine.
