    The restrictor went in place of the stat and allowed an improved but regulated flow through the circuit , the small bypass was kept standard.I think one reason it was used was to avoid possible stat failure during an event.

        Don - Ah ... maybe that's the truth behind the theory (see my 30th June posting above) about what happens without a thermostat in place, i.e. it bypasses the rad, not passes through it too quickly. Sounds more sensible, doesn't it?
