What should the tyre pressures be on my swb roadie? I have been putting in 26 front and 28 rear and my local garage chap has queried this 'cos he says my car is much lighter than a Marina?
    Cheers

    Re: Tyre pressures

I should have added that I did do a search and noted the advice given for a 1.3 Marina based roadie but my car is a 1.8 - heavier but does it matter?

      Re: Tyre pressures

      Hi Leigh
Your pressures do seem a bit high. I have a 6 cyl TR engine in the front of a hybrid SWB and use 22F 24R and 26 when towing a folding caravan with 50k nose weight.
My car has adj shocks set soft and it all works OK if a bit stiff at the back. What I found was if you go too low with the pressures the car boings about on the tyres and the wall of the tyres seem to suffer. Tyre size will make some difference but you could try letting the tyres down in 2lb increments and drive it over a set route to compare results. also you could try adj the balance of pressure between front and rear as the Marlin is nearer the 50/50 weight than the donor cars. Keep an eye onthe wear pattern ie over pressure wears the centre of the tyre and under pressure wears the outside edges and walls.

        Re: Tyre pressures

I used to run my 1300 engined version at 18 psi all round, so I doubt that you would need to go much higher on an 1800 if at all!

          Re: Tyre pressures

          Hi Leigh.

How do you find the ride at the moment? Is it a bit hard and even twitchy on poor road surfaces?

If so, expect a bit of a transformation when you let a few psi out!

What size tyres do you use?

            Re: Tyre pressures

I run a SWB with a 2lt pinto on 205/60/13 and the pressures at 22psi on all wheels and find it ok, only find it a bit light on the front at high speed cornering as the rear not sliding out.

The same 22psi. Tend to knock it down to 20psi when I go on a long run.

Uniroyal Ralley 185/70X13 Fiat 2L 150 bhp. weighs 740kg run on 19psi normally but 21 on motorway or long runs. Seems to handle Ok with no unusual tyrewear noticable, and not too hard on the bum.

                    Re: Tyre pressures

Thanks Guys - I will try 22psi all round and see how it feels. Donnie - I haven't noticed a particularly hard ride on the 145x13 tyres - we shall see when I change the tyres to something bigger!

                      Re: Tyre pressures

145 that must be fun to drive on ! what size rim width are the wheels. I think a rim of 5 to 51/2 wants about a 175/70 dont go too big or you may find the adhesion will suffer.

                        Re: Tyre pressures

Ben - the wheels are standard Marina ie 4.5. Do you think 5.5 is too wide a wheel to fit on my car?

I run 185/70X13 with 6J rims on my Hybrid. At 22 psi, they stick like glue. 175's on 5 or 5.5J will be fine.

Hi Leigh, A 5.5 rim is OK thats what most Marlins use. Ideally a 165 or 175 tyre the max would be 185 but the car may squirm about on that or any thing wider. You need a rim that is for the Vitesse/GT6 or Marina with the correct inset. Dont use Dolomite wheels.

                              Re: Tyre pressures

Hi Ben, what's wrong with Dolomite wheels? Dolomite Sprint alloys work fine on my Triumph-based car. They're 5.5 wide, but have a deep offset, 35mm positive. True, you need to use spacers in the rear, but they're fine in front.

I'm looking to move to wires at some point - but I'm concerned the increase in track at the front would push the wheels out too far - they're pretty much flush with the edges of the wings as they are - with the +35mm offset. Once I've got the adaptors and +22mm offset Spitfire wires on, I'm concerned they'll stick out too far in front. Does anyone have any experience with this?

                              Cheers,
                              Ty
