The following are some items that I have carried out on my Pinto 2lt engine that has helped improve the performance without spending loads of money on fancy carbs, manifolds and race cams.
Fitted a 38dgas carb froma V6 3lt engine fitted new jets to match the engine. Instead of both chokes operating at the same time and causing an engine lag when throtle operated fast. On the first choke spindle gear screw hole, remove screw and slot the hole to allow the 1st choke flap to operate 1/8th before the second choke then refit a longer screw with a lock nut so to allow the 1st choke movement.
Fitted a verneir camshaft pulley and after various tests, the cam pully is set at 5 degs advanced.
Fitted an Aldon lumination pointless system to the Bosch dizzy and this help starting and the engine runs smoother and stops points bounce at high RPM.
Altered the Dizzy to reduce the max internal advance so to allow plugs to spark correctly in relation to the piston position in the cylinder at high revs. This is done by welding a spot to the max advance slots to reduce the movement. Normal rotor movement is about 8mm this is reduced to 5mm.As above 3750 engine revs the Dizzy internal advance normally is to high at 38degrees plus and performance is lost.
Also in the dizzy their are 2 small springs that control the weights of advancement and 1 spring is stronger than the other. Remove the stronger spring and replace it with 1 of the same as the weaker one and make sure there is some slight tension on the spring applied on zero advancement of the rotor. This allows the advancement to respond quicker from tick over to approx 3750 revs and with a fix advanced as above the engine just keeps responding as the max advanced is controled to more than 38 degrees keeping the plug spark firing correctly in relation to the piston position.
All this has certainly has given the engine a noticable difference in performance and smoothness and better fuel consumption and running cooler compared to the std points,32/36 dgas carb, std cam pulley and the dizzy mods.
