Having managed to shear two backplate bolts putting them in I am now needing to replace them - yes, I was using the correct torque setting and yes, the car is now going back together! They are the 10x20mm ones but I'm not sure about the thread "pitch". It appears to be 1.5mm. Any clues as to what I should be ordering, and from where? The bolt head reads "GSF881SOM" if this is any help. I took the 1275 Marina bellhousing off in the hope that the bolts might be the same - but off course they aren't! Any advice from the engineers out there would be gratefully received.

hi Trevor. information that I can pass on for what its worth, ,is that this appears to be a standard high tensile 10mm. bolt. The lettering on top of the head shows that it was made by a midland firm , not sure what the GSF actually stood for, but have now gone from the scene, The 88 indicates a normal high tensile bolt, you can get higher or lower tensile , but the 88 is a mid range selection, and the ISOM replaces the old BSS standard and stnds for 'isometric' If you take a bolt into specialist "fastener" they will be able to match you. regards Brian

You are correct with the pitch at 1.5 for a 10mm bolt. The 'standard' is for metric coarse thread on metric size bolts and is fixed by the bolt diameter ie a 3mm diameter bolt has a pitch of 0.5mm, 6mm has 1.0mm pitch, 10mm has 1.5, 14mm has 2.0mm pitch and so on .The letters on head refer to manufacturer and 8.8 is the steel grade.Isom is Iso metric standard thread.Some metric bolts are available in a 'fine' thread configuration for use on 'thin wall' applications but you are unlikely to come across these .

Thanks gents. Is there no end to the knowledge available on this forum. Now I need to find a specialist. Ayr lacks a good motor factor let alone a specialist! I have a contact with a garage who might be able to find one in the "wee bolt" box. Apparently "wee bolts" are the ones left over after you have finished rebuilding a gearbox/engine/car/whatever, which are then tossed to the back of the garage accompanied by a cry of "weeeeeeee"

Hi Trevor, If you manage to snap the bolts with a torque wrench.....make sure you are using the correct scale ie kg/m or lbs/ft dont get them mixed up. Also use a little oil on the bolt. Make sure you only pull the wrench to the click and dont pull past it. Always wind off the torque when you have finnished work. Anyone know how you would get the wrench calibration checked???Ben Caswell probably not the last word on anything here!!

Try, W. KERR TRACTORS LTD, They are just past the hospital on the left going out of Ayr towards Castle Douglas, as they have a large selection of metric bolts as most of the machines and tractors they sell are built in europe.
