I have rebuilt a gearbox at no little expense, to replace the one that is in the car that seems to have lost 3rd and fourth gear. The one that made me drive all the way back from Finchley in second. Funny thing was I still managed to over take people. So this afternoon I bite the bullet and decided to start dismantling the front of the car prior to extracting the engine.
Now I figured that it would be easier to do this with the car facing out of the garage rather than in and seeing as I first and reverse I reckoned I might as well start her up and let the engine do the work.
And the gearbox feels fine. Four gears just as before. I really can't understand what is going on here at all. I took her out for a run and she was fine. Still going to change the gearbox but at a more relaxed pace now. tomorrow I will change the oil in the gearbox to flush out any bits of swarf from my attempts to get in into reverse at 40 instead of third. And I will see how she goes.
