One of them anyway. Can I assume that Marina rack and pinion gaiters are the same as Mini and other BMC/BL cars? In the manufacturers manual it says the way to fill the rack with oil is to pour it into the loose gaiter then fit the clamp or tie at the inner end. I did this once and got loads of oil all over the place despite jacking the car up to help the flow. Why didn't they just drill a feed hole in the top of the rack? Any useful tips?

There is or should be a hole in the centre of the rack housing thast enables you to centalise the rack when setting up the tracking. You could possibly fill with 1/3pint of oil using that but it will be a slow job. By the way the hole will be covered by rubber sleeve.

Re: Well, split my gaiters!
No I don't think the rack gaiter is the same as Mini ones, more likely to match toledo/dolomite or bizarrely Chevette. I use a large syringe with a plastic tube attached to inject the oil into the gaiter next to where the track rod comes out.
Warm the oil in a microwave first it makes it more runny and the job quicker. The plastic dip tube out of a spray bottle of domestic cleaner is a good on the end of the syringe. Pour the oil in and then insert the plunger, don't try to suck it up or you will be there all day.
The rubber sleeve over the centralising hole will have long perished away. Use tape and a hose clip to replace it.

Re: Well, split my gaiters!
Thanks for the info chaps. I found the rubber strap hiding the hole. I thought it was for holding the lighting wiring. I think I will rig something up to fill from there. I tried your method Don some time ago and seemed to get in a slimy mess. I just need to get fixed up with the gaiter.Franklin, Leicester

Re: Well, split my gaiters!
Most modern racks use a very fluid grease, I would beware of putting normal grease into a marina rack, there may not be enough movement to keep the pinion lubricated. My Marina rack in my Marina lasted over 100k and was still as good as the day it was made, lasting far longer on oil than a FWD escort one full of grease.
