  • Adding a Fuel Return

Rather than having the tank out, is there any reason why a fuel return line shouldn't be added into the filler neck?

A read someone's web site for a 7 type car who had done this as a temporary measure but ended up leaving it for a few years - are there any implications to doing it this way that anyone know of?

as i understand it - and i may be wrong, the return should really go in a position to prevent excess air being introduced into the fuel; because it carries more heat as it has been around the fuel supply sytem (being pressurised) it is more likey to vapourise if allowed to 'spray' directly back into the tank. now whether this is a problem or not im not sure...but an interesting question.

Ok, I'm NOT suggesting this as a sensible option - 'cos it's far too easy, and so MUST be 'wrong'...), but my 2.0L Pinto has a 32/36 Weber carb which has a fuel return outlet.

The previous owner of my Berli took a pipe from this return and plumbed it back into the existing fuel line with a 'T' piece a short way behind the fuel pump... It's all accessible under the bonnet.

As he told me, 'it seems far too simple - but I don't see why it shouldn't work!' And it has...

I've had no problems with the overheating fuel; tick-over is smooth and steady, etc...

      As I said - it's tooooo easy!

Ford Sierra sender will fit Escort tank and has feed and return, downside is it may not be compatable with existing gauge [mine's ok with VDO unit]

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll go with the Sierra sender, my gauge has always been way out so this may even improve things.

Nothing has been easy with the conversion so far, so no reason to start now! :-)

            Re: Adding a Fuel Return

If you are using a Pinto with a 32/36 or a 38dgas carb with a return, just cap the return at the carb as you do not need it.

              Thanks, Bob.

I think the previous owner was concerned of pressure build-up, which the float valve might not be able to cope with.

              That's reassuring, tho'.

                Hi Chris
                Have to agree with Bob
Ihave 2ltr Pinto with 32/36 and using a electric fuel pump and have capped off return with no problem so far!

                Regards

                  Re: Adding a Fuel Return

It's a fuel injected Zetec R so the return is a must - along with several pumps, swirl pots and about seven different hose diameters!
