  • Dolly Sprint Axle

There's been a few previous posts about this - anyone know if the Sprint axle would be a fairly straight swap for the 1.8 Marina one? Are the hubs the same PCD for example?

I've been offered one for a reasonable price and am thinking I'd get it in anticiation of the Marina one failing once I start hammering 150BHP through it :-)

      Re: Dolly Sprint Axle

Hi Chris, i smashed the crown wheel on my marina axel, and replaced it with a Dolly sprint one, you will need to clear all the dolly mounts off the axel, then weld on new spring seats, a panhard rod will help as well, the dolly brakes are bigger, but plumbed up ok, the hand brake cable had to be modified, the rest is fine. same PCD and width, but you may need to widen the end of the tunnel to clear the diff. it is somthing like 3.4:1 so you will go a bit faster! Made my speedo quite accurate all the best with it Mern

        Chris,
I have fitted a sprint axle to my car and it work very well in deed. Its pretty much as merv say, I have used a panard rod kit and anti tamp bars. I do not think if your car is a short wheelbase that it will fit. give me a call and I can give you more details 0720398794

Thanks for the info - I went and picked up the axle today anyway. Lee, do you mean that it won't fit a SWB car (which mine is)? :-(

Hi again Chris, it will fit a SWB, mine is, and it works very well! I think the SWB is why i had to open out the end of the tunnel. Merv

That's a relief! Hopefully I won't need it just yet and the Marina one will last a while - in the meantime I can start readying it for a swap out. Thanks again.

                Re: Dolly Sprint Axle

Hi Chris, just read this message, the Doly spint axle was made by Sailsbury and as standard had a 3.54 ratio, if you are lucky it may have a limited slip diff, if you turn the drive flange and both wheel hubs turn in the same direction then it has a limit slip diff. I am told that if you want to change the ratio a crown wheel and pinion from a Triumph 2000 (3.7) will fit also the same from a 5 speed TR7 Axle. The axle is very strong and also the rear brakes are larger than the Marina use, this can cause rear wheel lock up in the wet, but you can always fita pressure limit valve (adjustable) if you have this problem, you can also use the axle from a TR7 5 speed, this has a 3.7 ratio but like the Dolly axle the brackets have to be remove and new spring pads fitted.
You can get ready made spring pads from Rally Design they supply them for a MK1/2 Escort, I have use them and they save a lot of cutting and bending.

                Len.

                  Re: Dolly Sprint Axle

Thanks forall the info Len. I haven't got an LSD, the bloke I bought it off was well up on Sprints and I doubt he'd have let it go for £40 it had.

I've had a lot of stuff of Rally Design over the last few months and they're very good - I'll definitely be having me some of those spring pads.

One other thing, will I have to have (another!) new prop shaft?
