I am repairing a friend's roadster which has a broken timing chain. Some questions please:
a)the large bolt holding the crankshaft pulley is it left hand or right hand thread?
    b) is there sufficient clearance between the valves and the top of the pistons to have avoided the two hitting each other when the chain snapped?
    c) what should the valve clearances be?
    Thank you

The front crankshaft bolt is righthand thread. As far as I know the valves shouldn't hit the pistons. The valve clearances are thirteen thou (thats inch rather than metric)
It's unusual for timing chains to break and it usually due to something jamming in the system or seizing. Check the woodruff key in the crankshaft sprocket it might have sheared completely or partially.
    Good luck

Might be opportune to change the chain ang gears for MGB duplex style.
