  • Looking for a replacement diff

After many attempts to stop a persistent oil leak, it has now been decreed by my current long suffering mechanic that I require a replacement diff. I think my current one is a 4:4 ratio. It shows the speed as slower than I'm really going.

Can anyone, anywhere, tell me where I can start to source a Cortina diff???

I'll be checking the internet but just in case you happen to have one lying around..........

PS. Just heard about a Mk5 Cortina. Anyone know if that would fit my old jalopy?

Re: Looking for a replacement diff

Hi Sue. The Mk5 should fit but check that your present one is the chunkier 2000 type. The 1600 Cortina had a lighter type with smaller drive shaft diameter and smaller brakes.
I fitted nylotron bushes to my replacement axle - big difference!
Try oldpartstore.co.uk on their Mk5 parts list.
You could also try Danny's garage. He used to have a few Berli bits.

Didn't we use to put wood shavings and thicker oil in leaky diffs years ago? Ah no! Only if we were going to sell the car!

      Good luck

Re: Looking for a replacement diff

Hi Sue, ref your gearbox.. There were two types supplied, a type A and type B, The A was fitted to a 1500/1600 engine and was a lighter construction with smaller prop shaft coupling, brakes and differential, The type B was a heavier and more robust version, and is probably what you have. Physical difference seems to be in the size of the nose cone section. Unfortunately, my book makes no reference to a 4.4 ratio, but that would be a very low geared version suitable for hill climbs etc. the standard ratio seems to be about 3.7 or a long legged version for reps. cars of 3.4 So check your ratio again, but you would be better off with a standard ratio.
As regards getting a replacement, I phoned up 'Kitfit' for you, on 01522 778877,or e-mail on [email protected]
I have used them before, and John has reconditioned units available of both types, but not sure what ratios he has available without checking, he quotes £320.00 plus vat.
I hope this helps , give John a ring, he's very helpful.
        regards Brian.

Re: Looking for a replacement diff

              Hi Sue
I'm still on my original diff which was from a TD Cortina Wagon which was refurbished before it went in to the car. I've done 170000 kms now but probably not as much as your jalopy!

Hi Sue and anyone interested in diffs,
If its of any interest I have a 3.62 Sierra diff going begging. I don't honestly know if it would fit (unlikely) but its yours if any use. That goes for any other member as well but Sue has first grabs! Its fine, I changed to 3.38 in my BMW/Sierra; thats why its spare.Hope this is of some help.Best wishes to all. Hi Chris, I have a Sierra Berli, and would welcome a spare 3.62 diff.

                      All

I have made the decision to go for the most expensive option and splash out on a reconditioned diff from Kitfit. I haven't made the call yet but will be soon and then I will let you know what ratio I settle on. Ooer! More expense. But it's worth it!

Re: Looking for a replacement diff

Hi Sue. Have you still got the original 1300 diff in from when the car was built? Probably better with a different ratio anyway.Regards Doug

Doug has looked in book. 2ltr diff 3.75:1
                          1600 diff 3.89:1
                          Estate car option 4.11:1
                          Hope this helps.
