  • Eureka it fits

After extensive checks, measurements and cross checks it turns out the TR7 diff unit fits my Marina back axle. There a some slight differences with the unit casting and the planet gear carrier but every thing else matches. I took the decision to fit the unit into the axle banjo knowing that doing so would end my "sale or return" agreement with Rimmer Bros. I haven't road tested yet because I am awaiting replacement half shaft bearings. untill Dixie is back on the road I wouldn't say its a 100% replacement. I will add further postings as and when there are further developments. I have tried to upload some pics but they are too big and as yet I haven't worked out how to make them smaller. Regards Dave

    Re: Eureka it fits

    Well done Dave.
What are the changes in the diff casing.
Easy way to post pictures is to upload them to www.flckr.com. You can then link to them fairly easily rather than shrinking their size and resolution to make them fit 200k.
If you save them for public viewing, once you have linked to one, we can get to the others.
Failing that, email them to me, [email protected] and I will put them up for you.

Might the casting get close to fuel or brake lines on full travel of the axle over bumps etc?
Have fun with half shaft bearings. The hubs are difficult enough to get off and they are tapered. I took a 10 ton press to some bearings to get them off a pair of half shafts.
I never liked the way they were designed and usually loctite them back on, on the basis that it won't be me taking them off again.

Meant to say, if the component parts are the same, will Rimmers accept your old housing for a part refund, or would they rebuild it for stock?
      Worth a try!

        Re: Eureka it fits

Hi Steve. The casting differences in no way cause any conflicts with body panels, brake pipes etc. They are more cosmetic, for instance, where there's a dip in the marina casting its flush on the TR7, its hard to explain lol. Re the carrier, the difference is a slightly differant outer shape which results in differant machined appearance, again cosmetic. I have not spoken to Rimmers at this moment in time, I wanted to make sure the unit fitted, but when ordering the unit they were made aware I would be returning a Marina unit, I hoping for a full refund lol. Re the pics, I will have a try using your suggestion and if all fails I will email them to you. Sourcing the bearing was no problem, theres a local supply shop with in a few miles of where I live, the oil seals may be another story. They sell seals but cant identify them from the numbers shown on them so I have to take them so they came take measurements etc. The hardest part, in regards to removing the bearings, has been removing the hubs, phew thank goodness I have use of a press at work lol. Regards Dave

Ops I misunderstood your "part refund" remark. I thought you were on about the surcharge added untill they received the old unit lol. Dave

            Re: Eureka it fits

Well I have learnt something here I always thought the TR7 had the same axle as the Sprint.
Dave I would be very surprised if you get a refund if the pinion or crown wheel are broken(and wehter its worth the cost of even sending it) but let us know how you get on.
Have fun changing the half shaft bearings and use bearing fit(loctite)on the new ones.
Ben Caswell probably not the last word on anything here!!

              Re: Eureka it fits

Hi Ben. I spoke to Rimmers Bros today and they have no problem accepting my marina unit in exchange. When reading their return/warranty policy, they reserve the right to deduct a percentage of the surcharge if they deem the unit unserviable. I cant see there being a problem because they sell all the parts equired to full refurbish the unit, bare in mind the TR7 unit i bought is a fully refurbished secondhand unit, they do infact sell new units. The only thing I was suprised with was that Rimmers show a lack of interest about TR7's share the same diff unit as the Marina. But like I put in a previous thread I'm wont be 100% happy untill I test it under driving conditions.
              Regards Dave

                  Re: Eureka it fits

My Marina sourced axle is like the TR7 one pictured. Looks like there were changes made at some point.

                    Re: Eureka it fits

I am guessing they were just minor pattern changes and running repairs as it aged after being used so often. Dont think there will be any problems.

As Don has found I took the liberty of posting the pictures at http://www.fastmarinamagazine.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=3040

You can see all of them in one go there.

                      Re: Eureka it fits

There could be a clue to the actual age of the diff units design, on the lower outer edge of the TR7 unit is cast the word "STANDPART". Possible idicator to the days of Standard Triumph

Steve, no probs re the posting of the pics, I'm only to happy to help. Once I have totally finished the axle rebuild and road teated I will post Rimmer's part number for the TR7 unit.
