My car currently has a 10 inch Mountney wheel - this looks quite good, and if I was using the car mostly for on road I would stick with it, but as I am going to trial it, I think something a bit bigger might help. What size steering wheels do people have ? I am looking at a 12 or 13 inch, and have standard Marina wiper/indicator stalks - my only slight concern is at the wheel gets bigger it will be harder to flick the stalks on and off - any comments or advice ?

Re: Steerimg wheel sizes
I have an 11" and a 13" wheel. I cant make my mind up which is best. No problems with stalk position eith either fitted.
With a 13" wheel the gap between wheel and the door top on my SWB Roadster is just too small to get my knee through. Not a big issue but I park on the RHS of my garage facing inwards. Cant get out of the car without opening the drivers door to let my knee out and then swapping sides to get out over the passenger door. With a small wheel I can stand up straight away.
I would have thought that a 10" wheel was a little too small for easy manouvering at low speeds but each to their own.

Re: Steerimg wheel sizes
Thats a realy interesting thing to read as I a haveing the same thoughts as I rebuild my MkI. At 6' 2" I have the same problem and now have a 10" 11" 12" 13" ad 14" ready to see which is best when I get it back on the road. bougt them all off of eBay over time. Gregg

Re: Steerimg wheel sizes
Just measured my current one again and looks like it is actually 11" ( outside diameter ) - I suspect I will try to get a 13" as adding 1" all round looks about right. Tried to think about my legs clearing the wheel - I am 6 foot and think I can get in and out even with the door closed if I push myself up and keep my legs quite straight - I do tend to have my seat back as far as it will go ( SWB Mk2 roadster by the way ).

Re: Steerimg wheel sizes
Can I tactfully suggest to Andy that this is a really unimportant issue (for trialling) and it would be far better to keep what you have (I have a small Mountney on my car) and not make any changes until you've actually used the car in action first. The ability to twiddle the wheel quickly is by far the most important criteria and, for this, small must be better. Some triallers also fit a steering ball to the wheel. And remember that you'll be in-and-out of the car like a yo-yo on most trials so ease of access is very important.
See new posting I shall make shortly about mods for trialling in general.

Re: Steerimg wheel sizes
Andrew - I was not suggesting for a moment that the size of the steering wheel will have a massive impact on the performance of the car :-) However with Christmas coming up I have a choice of socks and slippers or something "useful" for the car .....
