sounds a bit drastic Geoff - which bit did you have to weld, some units are not for road use - the Mountney for example, they quoted it was not suitable and only for off road. I don't think there is any laws banning the use of suitable quick release wheels, perhaps so in Germany. Most are FIA approved for racing, if its good enough for these boys it must be strong enough for us - will keep searching - can you let me have a little more detail, I can weld anything to anything - regards Mike

hello Lee, have you spoken to Moto-Lita at Thruxton, they make all manor of wood rim wheels, they make the Mk4 in leather the size you want but might just be able to produce one in wood - not cheap but worth a try - regards Mike L-S

Re quick release steering wheels if you go to www.rallydesign.co.uk they have a online catalogue, look under steering wheels and there quick release hubs there. I have used their parts on three cars and they are approved for racing if required. Len.

If you are planning to use a quick release you need to make sure its mounted correctly as this poor chap found out....

                      Re: quick release steering wheels

I finally fitted said unit and photos enclosed. An interplate was made to take the classic Mountney wheel out of 4mm durol ally -I do take Peters point about fitting the wheel correctly - this unit has a double position and it very well made indeed. Some I looked at were not up to standard and rejected by me and the agent. Advantage of repositioned wheel is that my knees no longer in the way of the steering, I'm 6ft. Wheel is more in the lap so gives more room for pedel control. Just as easy to get out of car, if not simply remove wheel.
