    Hunter - poor running at 2000rpm

    Hi Guys
    I have mentioned this problem as part of previous Forum messages, and it is currently the only problem that is now bugging me on my car. You should be so lucky, some might say!

    The engine in my Hunter I believe is a 2 litre ex.Granada, with fuel injection and solid state sparks department i.e. no distributor. It has only done 10,000 miles from new in 1998.

    The engine starts first time every time, and settles down to an even 1,000rpm tickover. When I accelerate through the gears up to say 3,000rpm or more in each gear, there is no obvious problem. If I cruise at around 2,000rpm, or I try to accelerate from these revs in a high gear, there is a certain amount of minor jerking or flat-spot. Nothing serious, but occasionally just a bit niggling.

    I had thought to take the plunge, and visit a tune-up garage, but just lately I seem to spending a heap of money in other directions, and would prefer not to for the time being. There is not a lot for an amateur to do to these. The system has an expensive cleanable air filter, which I cleaned with a proprietary cleaning fluid. Got a lot of dirt out of it, but no change to this problem. Not really surprised, but worth doing anyway.

    Anybody got any ideas on this please?

    Hi Mike
    Try changing the HT leads and replace or do away with the suppressors in the distributor cap .
    I have known a one or two people to have problems with them.

      Crank angle sensor can become contaminated with oil due to proximity to filter.Not sure it would cause your problem but worth checking

        Hiya all
        Bob, my engine has no distributor, with sparks being sorted electronically. I think the HT lead idea would be valid if the 'flat spot' was over a larger rev range. As it is, the problem only occurs at 2000rpm. If I accelerate from tickover to say 4,500rpm, there is no apparent problem at all. Very puzzling.

        Alan, there is no leaking oil around the filter area, and everywhere looks clean. I am not familiar with the sensor. What should I be looking for?

        I spoke to my friendly local garage proprietoy while my Hunter was getting an MOT done (passed with flying colours!). He said that I should try changing the (injection)fuel regulator for an adjustable type, and then tweak it up a bit richer. The downside to this is that the regulator will cost me around £80, which for an experiment is a bit pricey. I think I will live with the problem a bit longer, until a cheaper remedy comes along!

                Hi Mike,
                I've a similar engine (DOHC I4 V8) on carbs, and the engine characteristics changed noticably after installation in the Marlin. In the donor Sierra is was very smooth and had no flat spots that I remember. Power delivery was a smooth progression through the whole rev range.

                Now it is in the Marlin the changes around the the engine have been to fit a small air filter inplace of the huge Ford item and a very free flowing exhaust.

                The overall result takes me back to my days when I rallied an Escort Mk1. A bit fluffy at low RPM though tick over is OK, and it needs a bit of revs to make it pull away smoothly. Its got a flat spot at about 2000rpm, which if you accelerate gently is hardly noticable, but if you floor the throttle it coughs and doesnt pick up at all. But when the revs get to above 3000rpm on full throttle then it really does provide a surge of power right up to the redline at 6200rpm.

                I suppose what I am saying is that it doesn't take much to change the way an engine responds.
