    As the warmer weather is upon us is means its time to start the final process of the rebuild of my Mk 1 Roadster. Painting. Back to my old trade staring with the Primmer/Filler coat(s). Then fit the loom, then chck the engine (again), then the top coat colours - 3 different - then....... then....... then.....

    Hi Gregg - looks exciting - please tell me how you are doing it - I cant get any sense out of paint suppliers! Etch primer, wash primer? (never heard of that before!) whats the best way to prep a Marlin?

      Hi Cameron, have you got a week!!
      Etch is used to cover alloys, in general it overcomes the fact that alloys have a small amount of oil in them, which a normal primmer would not grip onto. Wash is often used before anything else to help prevent corrosion, there any many Wash/Etch.
      I have used an Etch primmer on the alloy side pannels first then a 2K primmer/filler, air dry, on the whole of the car after that. 2/3 full coats.
      There might be the need of a 'sealer' on some panels to stop reaction to what you are putting on, the thinners reacts with the old paint, "pickles".
      'Barcoat' is one such product, a green colour, no thinners needed, just filter and spray on. I use pop socks as a filter on EVERY pot fill.
      Put 'wash prmer for cars' or 'etch primer for cars' into google and start reading. And yes I did do it for many years afetr being trained by ICI.
