After reading Jez's article in Pitstop regarding Ford sender and Smiths gauge I took the plunge and bought a Smiths sender from an MG. The float needed to be bent the opposite way and the stops adjusted to give a reading with the flange mounted horizontally. I cut the middle out of the Ford flange and rivetted the MG sender into it leaving the Ford fuel pickup attached to the flange. Thought it wasn't working until I realised I was low on petrol and after putting £10 of fuel and £10 of tax in the tank the gauge showed half full ! Like Jez, I think the reading is a bit conservative, but at least I've got a working gauge now.
