  • Sportster - Rear Suspension

I have just done a trail fit on the rear suspension of my E30 Sportster. It looks like the upper and lower spring plates are about 1" out of alignment - so much in fact that the bump stop misses its partner on the trailing arm. Has anyone else had this problem? Picture here for anyone interested! http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/martinclan/pictures.htm

    Robin,
I hadn't noticed this before but mine appears to be the same. I have fitted the springs and they seem to fit OK. Perhaps someone out there with a finished car can comment?

      Hi Robin,
I have just had a look at your website and see that you have made an adapter plate to fit your steering column to the chassis. Can you explain why you did this?
I'm just about to fit mine so would appreciate knowing why you went down this route. I've seen another with the mounting bracket fixed upside down so that the ignition key is on the left, but don't know why? I agree with you that Marlin's build manual is very limited compared with most companies which is a shame becuase their cars designs are great. They kept promising a new manaul but i've not seen one yet?

      thanks

        Reply for Peter...
I found that the steering column when assembled with the Marlin lower column was about 12mm to long for the holes to line up. Also I found that the steering wheel was not parallel to the scuttle so I took the opportunity to fix both problems in one go!

          Hi Robin,
did you ever get a reply from Mark about your rear suspension alignment issue you raised above on the 6 Dec 2004.
I see that Patrick and Richard are having the same problem.
Maybe it's nothing to worry about?

            Re: Sportster - Rear Suspension

To be honest I never persued the issue and am kind of ignoring the problem at the moment. I guess with the limited movement the rear suspension has it won't be a problem - but I would be interested to here what Patrick and Richard have done - I am not in touch with these particular builders..

I will speak to Mark about the rear suspension issue next week when they are back. I'm planning on sticking the rear wheels on at the weekend to see if the tracking looks ok (cant measure it but should be able to eye it up).

It may just be the top spring seats in the wrong place. I will update as I figure things out.

Not talked to Marlin yet, but I have tried fitting rear springs. It seems to work ok, but I am not 100% happy with it.
