Re: petrol fumes
As Terry says its more likely to be the fuel line. The breather pipe should have a rubber pipe run higher than the top of the tank before turning down so that a full tank doesnt slop over.
Also check the filler neck as this is on the side of the tank. I try to avoid (roadster uses same tank) putting the car away with a full tank. I also find the heat of the engine vapourises the fuel in the carbs and that also smells for a while. Leave the garage door open for an hour if you can.Ben Caswell probably not the last word on anything here!!

Re: petrol fumes
HI,
Thanks for comments, note petrol pipe feed is plastic end to end no tears or brakes. The fumes are directly out of overflow/breather pipe below car and only 2 gall in 7+gall tank.
However this pipe is metal all way back to tank and does not curve up at any point !. So will try replacing run to curve as bexly said or put a loop on it which may create a vapor trap !. Will advise.

Re: petrol fumes
Hi Fred, not sure about Berli cars, but a number of the 5exi and Sportster builders use a Mocal Fuel Tank Breather Valves. They come in varius types of fittings from Merlin Motor Sports. They also cut off the fuel if the car should ever over turn. Not something any of us want to test but a nice peace of mind and helps justify the quite high price. They do need to be mounted vertically. I have one on my Sportster and the car is kept in my garage which is integral to my house. Never smelt any fuel fumes at all.
