I have taken over the build of a LWB Cabrio and started to check it over.
I wondered if anybody one knew if the steering rack used on the cabrio is a Sierra non power steering unit and if so from what year or if it is from another car escort or whatever. The doner was a 92 2.0 inj lx which I assume will have had power steering.
The problem I have is when the Marlin long one piece steering shaft is fitted, it appears to be 1.5 to 2 cm to long. To even get it on, the universal joint spline onto the rack has to be pushed 1 centimeter past the hollow for the retainng bolt in the rack spindle and at the bulk head the end, the steering shaft coupling is hard up against the bulkhead bearing. I know there is some movement in the rack mounts but I am sure there is not enough to get around this. So I assume one of two things, either the shaft is to long which seems unlikley as I assume Marlin jig build them or it has the wrong rack fitted.
If anybody has had a similar problem or has accurate dimensions for the length of the shaft I would be grateful to hear from them. I am going to take the rack off again tomorrow to have another look at the problem but any further info would be gratefully received.
