    Hi
Has anyone picked up on this proposal that all vehicles will have 12 months insurance even if it's not on the road. If it has a V5 it will need insurance ?

    Re: Insurance

Yup. If it is taxed it will need some form of insurance. If it isn't taxed it has to be SORNED.
It's supposed to stop people driving uninsured vehicles! I understand that people who drive while uninsured don't give a d*** about the law so why this law will be any different escapes me. Peter.

It’s irrelevant, why mention it? - Why wouldn’t you want insurance a car on or off the road? I SORN in the winter but I still insure the car for obvious reasons.

        Re: Insurance

I can see the advantage of saving money. If you are not using the car for whatever reason, illness, long term repair / rebuild then a SORN is advantageous, if the car is kept in a garage, what harm can befall it if its not insured. Thus another short term saving.
However, always kept my cars fully insured and taxed. But I can see the saving.

          Re: Insurance

a good home insurance will cover what ever is in your garage/outbuildings providing the buildings are within your property's boundary, but be careful not to over or under insure your goods as this can render your insurance void.

Chris, there may be someone who does not know about this, that is why we have a forum, it is not irrelevant to pass on information.

              Re: Insurance

If you choose to SORN your car some insurers will offer a reduction in cover to off road/ Normally this would be cheaper than full cover. But not sure how this would work on a six monthly basis.
There is a storey of a classic being off the road and parked
on private land but insight of the highway. It was dragged away and destroyed because the tax had expired and it had no insurance.

                Re: Insurance

For law abiding motorists, this isnt a problem.
All the time the authorities operate within the law, it isnt a problem.
Taking a car from private land, without the permission of or notifying the registered keeper is theft.
A bit late if the car is crushed.

The problem is that for some people insurance premiums are vastly higher than the value of the car, simply through the post code that they live in or their occupation.
These are things that are sometimes beyond their immediate control and do not reflect their driving record.

I insure my Marlin for a year and SORN it for six months or sometimes less if the weather is fine.
When it is SORN its garaged.
                Simples.

                    Re: Insurance

One thing to remember is that if your car is the cause of a fire within your garage and its uninsured it wont be covered by the house insurance only the damage to the building and contents will be covered.

Also if your garage adjoins the house or is integral to the house make sure the access door is fire resisting BS 476 and self closing. A smoke alarm in the garage would be a good idea.

                      Beware

This could catch you out if you delay renewing insurance on a car that is taxed because you know you won't be using it for a few days.

It is based on comparing the insurers' data base with the records of taxed cars

                        Re: Insurance

You need to confirm your renewal before the insurance runs out, and I would suggest you have confirmation. There is no grace period anymore. So if your letter with the cheque(remember those) gets lost you could be in the poo.

It also says on the web site that it is your responsibility to make sure your car is on the insurance database
