  • Leaning wheels and tyre wear

I read the original post on this subject but there isn\'t much in the way of detail on the modification. Does anyone have any details of the \\\"top hat\\\" modification that is mentioned. I have a Sierra Berli with leaning read wheels and uneven tyre wear. If anyone has any drawings, dimensions or photos I\\\'d be grateful.

I also find I get uneven tyre wear on the fronts...perhaps the tracking is not right for a Berli. Does anyone request any specific settings when they get their tracking done?

    Thanks,
    Gary

        Hello Gary.
The top hat should already be there. it is the springs that sag a bit, to give the large amount of camber. You can give me a ring ( number at front on mag ) if you want to talk about it.

Re: Leaning wheels and tyre wear

          Hi Gary,
I trust that you have had my emails and drawings? The drawings were from Dave Hitchings and Colin Neeld. The problem I have found is that the rear suspension has been treated differently on cars. There was a problem and it seems it was being developed as they were produced. I know of five cars with new springs which have been spaced to give extra length, and the last car I had, had adjustable seats similar to the Cabrio design.
          Regards
          Danny.

Re: Leaning wheels and tyre wear

Hi Gary. I have only just picked up your enquiry as I\'ve been away on holiday. Danny is correct in his statement that all car\'s rear suspension were different, as it was developed as the cars were produced. As there were only 17 ever built , then the project was never fully completed. However, what you have to do is to lift the body higher so that the wheels become vertical. Initially, mine were about 1.5\" lean in, which scuffed the tyres out in less than 7,000 miles. First, I made a tubular top hat section that fitted over the existing spigot, which located the top of the spring, this helped considerably, but then I obtained a set of rear springs normally fitted to Estate car, these were a longer length, and helped to lift the chassis. As a result, my wheels are slightly toe\'d-in at the top [ about an 1/8\" ] and tyre wear is good. The other benefit is that the car rides higher, there is more clearance under the wheel arches and looks better. The down side is that the drive shafts operate at a steeper angle than the designer would deem desirable. [This is because you are lifting the diff. higher than the wheel centre.] Please give me a ring if you need to discuss, My tel. no. is in the Pitstop.
