  • Electronic Ignition upgrade

I have been passed info from peter Seabrook Harris about Powerspark Ignition Ltd.

If anyone wants to upgrade to electronic ignition they will offer us a club rate.

"Dead easy to fit and ditch those pesky points and condenser!"

    Re: Electronic Ignition upgrade

    Looks good Sue.

Similar to some of the eBay units if not the same.
As a starter kit I would reccomend fitting one.
Tickover, power delivery and top revs will be improved not to mention all important fuel consumption.
The trouble is that you will enjoy the performance and use more fuel as a result.

The only catch is an extra bit of wiring if I remember correctly but nothing requiring great skill.

You can keep your old points and a screwdriver in the glove box and revert back to points if you have problems.

    Nice one.

What do people need to do to get a deal?

      Re: Electronic Ignition upgrade

Just fitted one to a neighbour's 1275 Midget. Extra wiring is easy-peasy. Timing is easier to adjust, spark better, runs better.
If your car is older and has been converted from positive to negative earth take care that the coil is wired in correctly. The unit hates reverse voltage!

Electronic Ignition Module fitted to my Berlinetta 3/7/2011
I replaced the old Lucas one.
Easy to install and set up.

Steve, I guess you just say you are a Marlin Owner. They may need proof but I only picked up this lead second hand so it's best to contact direct.

            Re: Electronic Ignition upgrade

I bought an electronic dizzy off Ebay about 4 years ago and never got it to work (By the it was far too late to complain.). Engine just would not fire at all. I will try again and if it really is duff then I will strip the module out and fit one from your link. Would be a waste of a new Dizzy to do otherwise.

              Re: Electronic Ignition upgrade

Its a shame Don, I know people who have them working fine.

Worth pointing out that a dizzy often gets neglected. Internal bearings and spring wear and age so the timing becomes erratic. Vacuum diaghrams start leaking, everything starts to age.
At best the timing curve was an approximation and was designed for leaded fuels not modern unleaded that has different combustion characteristics.
For good advice talk to distributordoctor.co.uk.

The units from powerspark clean up the points signal, the lastest offering from 123ignition.nl allow you to set the timing to suit throttle and vacuum at particular revs. It takes a while to set up but it works.

For the mad men amongst us, get rid of the distributor and fit a Megajolt using Ford EDIS as its spark source.
Lots of time and money and it can take you on the EFI control as well.

I hope this advice helps those who are unsure.
