  • Dual 7" Brake Servos

    All,

Several of us over on Madabout Kitcars have been researching the possibility of replacing the weedy little Metro servo in our Sportsters and Cabrios with a dual diaphragm unit.

After a lot of legwork Mike took the plunge and bought one, so we know it fits in a Cabrio. He then lent it to me, and I fitted it in Vikki, my Sportster - so we know it fits in there as well.

More importantly, Vikki is on the road - so I have successfully tried the new servo out. It's light years ahead of the Metro servo. As I stated in our thread on Madabout:

You can feel the amount of braking effort going in from the position of the pedal, not the bulging of the muscles on your leg. No more "pray and push harder" moments when you have to fall out of Warp speed suddenly.

Any way - Mike is trying to get a group buy together with the supplier of the servo. If you are genuinely interested, and in a position to commit to purchasing one, please reply to the end of the thread I've linked to above. Once we have a decent amount of pre-orders, We can go back to the supplier who will order them from the states for us, with a little discount thrown in.

Price is estimated to be £65-£70 Inc for a Zinc finish servo. Stainless may be an option, but we don't have a price on that yet.

    Cheers,

Jason (AKA GreatOldOne, or GOO to his friends)

        Hugh
The Dual 7" servo is identical in diameter to the Metro servo at approximately 7" in diameter. It installs via the same 4 hole fixing, albeit on 85mm centres as opposed to 90mm for the Metro. The length is 2" more than the Metro, but as it is tapered it fits in the line of the bonnet in both Cabrio and Sportster.
I have installed one in my Cabrio with the standard Sierra reservoir fitted successfully under the bonnet.
The attached photo shows a trial fitting - note the adaptor plate will require amending to get the angle of rotation right to get the reservoir upright.
There are lots more photos on the Madaboutkitcars site:

Hi can I ask why don't you go back to the std sierra/Granada servo with the modification to the pedal box ?? Then it's how mr ford planned it

                    Lee

It's a direct swap, with no messing around with modifying anything (bar opening up the servo mounting holes to suit)

I'm also led to believe that the Sierra servo (much like the BMW servo) won't fit - hence the need for the Marlin supplied metro unit.

Hi Jason I have a Granada servo fitted and from the pictures nothing is cut out of the side panel edge. Just wondered that maybe a cheaper option.

Lee - I have no idea. Without seeing pics of a granada / sierra servo in situ in a cabrio or a sportster, I couldn't say.

I know Mike has a cabrio, and he had a Metro servo as supplied by Marlin. As did I in my Sportster. I guess this is due to us having BMW based cars, where the BMW servo definatley won't fit at all.

                              Servo upgrade

Hi all. Just a further bit of feedback regarding the replacement of the metro servo, which is standard fit on some cabrios and most sportsters. Mike did a considerable amount of research into sourcing and is currently bringing in a consignment of 7inch dual diaphram units from USA. Jason has done an initial trial on his sportster and been impressed with the results.Mike very kindly let me buy one of trial batch he'd aquired and I fitted it a couple of days ago.Although my car is on sorn at the moment and I was only able to drive up and down the drive, I can endorse Jason's findings, namely that the amount of pressure required at the pedal is noticeably reduced. The important "feel" is more like it should always have been.I can't wait to try it on road. The amount of work required to fit the unit is obviously going to vary from vehicle to vehicle, however I feel that the effort is well rewarded.Regards.
