Picure size experiment
Originally posted by h.m.cumming1 View PostAm I correct that the maximum pic. size is now 97.7kb??
I believe it is much larger so I am trying out an experiment here. The following photo was on my desktop at 702kb. I went into my forum profile and created a group and then uploaded 3 pictures, one of which is hopefully following this text. In this message I then typed
and I got the location by displaying the image, right clicking on it and selecting "copy image location"
[img] http://www.marlinownersclub.com/foru...5&d=1322500929 [/img] but note that there must NOT be any spaces between the square brackets and the location description (I only put them in to make sure you could see the line)
I hope all that made sense so here goes
Well that seemed to work

Picture size issues
So far as I know on this forum there are two prime ways of posting images on this forum.
Attachments.
Each attachment is a copy of a picture on your computer or any other source. These copies are stored on the file server run by Cyberpharm on behalf of the MOC.
There is a limit to the total data size of all the attachments that a user can store, and when this limit has been reached, the user will be notified and some files will need to be deleted by the user in order to attach more. Care needs to be taken if the attached pictures are significant to technical posts that others may want to access at a later date.

right click on the image to see its properties.
This was the same way that the old forum worked and why attachments should be small.
Linked images
This requires the user to upload an image to one of several online image hosting services like flickr.com or photobucket.com (or any other image hosting service). These services have unlimited storage space (unlike Cyberpharm) so images size and numbers can be very large indeed. They also offer album and indexing of your images but take care that if images are reindexed in any way the link to the file will be lost, especially important in technical posts. To add this image to your post you need to add a link like this
again right click to see properties.
these linked images are not stored by Cyberpharm/MOC so no limits are applied
I hope this helps.

Hi All,
The maximum size you can upload to your 'album' (which is different from profile and signature pics etc) is 1600 by 1200 pixels with a file size of just over 1MB.
Having said that, space on the server is not unlimited so ultimately these restrictions may have to be tightened in the future. We will be keeping an eye on this.
On a separate note this restriction is applied to anyone who is in the 'club members' group. Other groups would have a different restriction in place.
I hope this helps!

I didn't see your post Steve when I wrote mine, you are correct of course! I believe the 'album' restrictions apply to the attachments as in your first example. We have tried to make the limits for members very generous, they are all raised to some degree from the default.
Thanks
Jon

To emphasise what has been said before.
For small files use attachments; if you are waiting for files to upload they are probably too large, you will probably swamp Cyberpharms allocation and be forced to delete them at a later date.
For large files use links to an image hosting service; where the files are stored remotely. You can upload multiple images of any size, get a progress bar, full album editing facilities etc etc. a much more user friendly experience.
The Speed camera accident spot image I posted was quite small already, I could have more than filled the page several times over with a high res picture. But its not wort posting a pic with greater pixel size than your screen.
Edit
I have just noticed that any pictures you posted in the old style forum are still recorded as your attachments. They do not show in this new forum allocation. I wonder then if we have not started on this new forum with a clean allocation sheet?Last edited by stevejgreen; 29-11-11, 10:49 AM.
