Prop shaft rubbing on my leg!

Driving over a large swell or bump at speed makes the prop shaft rub (very worryingly) on the transmission tunnel (I think). I'm getting quite concerned that one day it might come all the way through! It's only been doing it for the last fifteen years or so, albeit infrequently

Anyway, I thought it's about time I looked at it, so has anyone else experienced this and have a solution please?

This is a guess, but if your prop shaft is connected securely to the diff & engine then the only way it can rub against the tunnel is if it is levered. This would make me believe either the rear axle is moving on the bumps and then is pulled back into line, or the engine mounts are allowing for movement.

Personally I'd check the condition of the rubber mounting blocks on the engine, the gearbox cross brace & the axles mounting onto the rear leaf springs (and the springs attachment to the chassis along with the physical springs.)

Hi Chris, can you see where it's touching on the tunnel? If it's at the rear then it's the spring mountings or the axle to spring mounts. Hugh.

wHILE THE AXLE MOUNTS MAY BE A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR ,I THINK THE PROBLEM LIES MORE WITH TH PROPSHAFT NOT FOLLOWING THE CENTRELINE OF THE CAR.iF YOU LOOK AT THE DIFF CASING YOU WILL NOTICE THAT THE PINION IS BIASED TOWARD THE DRIVERS SIDE[NECESSARY TO ACCOMODATE THE PLANET GEAR] THIS RESULTS IN THE PROPSHAFT RUNNING CLOSER TO THE TUNNEL ON ONE SIDE OF THE VEHICLE[DRIVERS]ESPECIALLY TOWARD THE REAR.I REPOSITIONED THE SIDE OF THE TRANSMISSION TUNNEL ON THE DRIVERS SIDE[UNBOLTED FROM REAR BULKHEAD AND FLOOR]AND MADE UP NEW TOP COVER FOR THE TUNNEL TO ACCOMODATE EXTRA WIDTH .PROBLEM SOLVED.

I thought I had this problem when I built mine back in '84.
Eventually turned out the shaft was actually rubbing the handbrake cable. One P clip later and the problem was solved.
