  • Exhaust fumes whilst driving

    Hi folks
Does anyone else get a smelll of exhaust in the cabin when driving their Cabrio?
I guess we all get the air coming over our shoulders whilst on the move hence so many of us have some sort of wind deflector, but I get a strong wiff of fumes especially at slower speeds!
I do have a rear exit exhaust system as opposed to side exit which I had on my previous Roadster, does this tend to give a problem for anyone else with rear tail pipes?
    Regards

Hi Brian. I too suffered from occasional exhaust fumes with the hood down. I put it down to the fact that my pipes (at the rear) have an upward sweep for aesthetic reasons. I've fitted downward deflectors and that has certainly got rid of 90% of the problem. Regards David.

Hi Bryan does your exhaust come out straight at the back ? This was a problem for cabrios in 90's and a simple solution was to angle the pipe at the back so it's being the back wheel. Derek jones the membership secretary has put angle down exhaust ends also to combat this problem. When I had my v8 i got a wiff of fumes but nothing on my current cabrio.

One solution is to fit a rear wind deflector: this stops the air circulting back into the cabin, and makes for a quiter ride too.
The easy one to source and fit is the new shape MG MGF MGTF wind deflector. There are usually a number on ebay at any one time, and generally sell for around £60-£70.
Have a look under the Wiond deflector thread.

I use to get a wiff of fumes, since I shortened the rear bumper supports (move the bumpers closer to the car) which allows the exhaust pipes to be flush with the bumbers and fitted a MGF wind deflector it seems to have help the problem.

I like the shortened bumper supports. Nice touch - I can see why you have a show winner!

              Hi folks
              Thanks for all your replies
You can see from the photo's that since I bought the car(pic with hard top)
The "Big Ugly" as I named it exhaust has gone, since apart from bieng b****y ugly barely went beyond the bumpers so I thought that was the problem!
I had the exhaust built as long as it is now to clear the Tow Bar bracket as I originally wanted to keep this,I then decided maybe the bracket etc was causing disruption to the airflow under the car so removed it and shortened the bumper brackets which has vastly improved the look at the back but has done nothing to improve the prob with fumes!
I am booked in to have the Tail Pipes shortend slightly and turned down,so hopefully this will help.
I already have a wind deflector fitted from a MGF which realy cuts down the buffeting from behind but still the fumes get in!!

Any chance of a pic of your rear end!!!
              Cheers

                      Hi Lee
                      Thanks for the pic's
Your Cozzie Cabrio exhaust is not so different from mine in location and Bob's is also similar so there is hope for mine yet,we will have to see when the mods are done!!
Nothing done with the front as yet but I did notice earlier tonight that is not the tidiest!
I intend to remove the Stainless Bumpers for a polish up prior to our Spanish trip so may well have a go at it then
                      Bob
Ha Ha I knew my request to Lee would do the trick!!
                      Cheers

                        Re: Exhaust fumes whilst driving

I got so fed up with the fumes on my Hunter that I entrusted my local High Street Village garage to the task. This firm is run by a bunch of enthusiasts who sorted out the problem after 2 visits. Firstly, they sprayed oil around the exhaust manifold (with a cold engine) and spotted some bubbles of air coming out. They removed the manifold, sanded the face flat and reinstalled with a good quality gasket and some super-goo.

Problem was much improved but not totally cured, so on a second visit the guy welded in a short piece of stainless exhaust pipe where the silencer/cat joins the main pipe. He thought the old bit of pipe was very thin and was allowing gas to escape. Anyway, the problem was solved. By the way, the exhaust pipe finishes behind the rear offside wheel horizontally.

                        Cheers

                          Hi Mike
Car has gone in today to have to have the taipipes shortened and turned down, hopefully that will cure the prob!
Will post results at the weekend

                            Re: Exhaust fumes whilst driving

Prompted by the idea of the MG rear wind deflector, I checked out e-Bay and sure enough found various versions. However, my car appears to present a few problems in the potential fitting of a deflector: namely, soft-top fabric is very tight behind the seats, added to which are 2 headrests competing for space. So no go for me. My wife would have been pleased with a deflector as she is often bothered by wind around the back of her neck!
                            Cheers
