  • Interesting Engines in a Sportster

    Thought you might like to see these two different engines in a Sportster.................



    Does anyone know what it is?
    Clue - Not BMW or Ford: Owned by Malcolm Platt








    This is Ian Kitchener's BMW M20 2.8 (bored and stroked 2.5) with separate throttle bodies and bespoke electronic ignition.

    Very nice...top one looks like a BMC C series..? Interesting choice if so & very nicely done. Be interested to find out more...e.g. why & what gearbox..!
    Marlin Roadster, LWB...1860 B Series + Ford Type 9
    Renault Espace 54mm front calipers, vented discs, cycle wings and adjustable tie-bars.

      Hi . I know this particular engine quite intimately. It is a Datsun 280Z unit fitted with Jaguar carbs and inlet manifold. Regards David.

          David would indeed know what it is having spent many happy? hours fettling it.

          The why is because I thought it went well with the period look of the car. And I like straight sixes. And it is a good engine which makes a nice noise.

          The gearbox is also Datsun 280ZX circa 1980. The outlet manifold is Janspeed. The original torque quoted as 149 ft/lbs at 4000 rpm.

                        Yes, I think it was Marlin's own racing Sportster with a Rover V8.

                        You'll find some more photo's here....



                        Although the Des Hamill book shows it with green side bonnets??

                        The car was for sale on ebay recently.

                          yeah...you are right.....it was recently for sale at fleebay...sold for rather low money as i remember...it changed colors during its live as racecar certain times. i was near buying it..but missed the chance.

                            BMW M50/M52 Engines:

                            In a Sportster:
                            The engine bay is very tight in both width and length for an M50/52. This is Andrew Curtis's solution to the air intake fouling the side panel:

                            In a Cabrio
                            The engine bay is smaller still in the Cabrio, but an M50 can be made to fit. This was Marlin's recommended solution - chop 75mm out of all 6 inlet manifold runners!





                            Since the installation of this M50, Marlin have progressed on to the M52 engine:



                            Note the air intake has been taken back into the footwell, but it would have been possible to take the air intake forward using the arrangement in the M50 above.
                            The big advantage of this inlet manifold is that it has not been necessary to modify the runners, keeping it standard.

                            NoteDo NOT choose the later M52TU options as the anti theft electrics (EWS) are IMPOSSIBLE to overcome! - it is recognisable by having twin Vanos (Variable Valve timing on both Inlet, and Exhaust cams) - the earlier M52 had single vanos.

                              If anyone is thinking of upgrading their Marlin Sportster to a BMW M50/52 engine, I have a pair of brand new engine mounts for sale. These were made by Marlin specifically for fitting an BMW M50 engine in a Sportster.
