1.8 B Series Carbs

I think my twin SU HS4s are a bit tired and am trying to decide whether to spend the money on having them reconditioned or perhaps fit something different all together?

I would welcome any suggestions as to what I can fit without bodywork mods (Webers etc.) and pros/cons of the various options. Thanks in advance!

Webbers are meant to be a very good carb once set up, but they are nightmare to get right (but once there they stay there forever apparently), the performance of them isn't massively better either unless your engine is modified itself. More worringly, it probably won't fit unless you put a 90degree inlet manifold on (which inhibits the performance), and even then it will be quite tight.

The other main option touted for the MGB is the HIF styled carb, this sits slightly longer than the HS4's so with my under-bonnet space they wouldn't fit. The only real benefit is that the fuel collector doesn't get starved on hard cornering like the HS4's can exhibit.

Personally, if you've no performance mods then I'd spend the money on reconditioning your carbs (about ?60 if you do it yourself) and then some more on getting a rolling-road tune - that way you get the best of both worlds. If you've got performance mods then look towards a HS6 or Webber.

If you want to read up a lot more on this, I can recommend Peter Burgess' book "How to PowerTune the MGB". In it he discusses how to modify the carbs to ensure maximum airflow etc - (send me an email if you want a copy of the articles).

On a slightly different note, I'm getting a large scoop made up for the air-filter side of the car (blumin nightmare trying to find a air-box so taking the route of modding the body). The guy who is doing it said he'd be able to make copies from the mould for ?60ish.

How about injection? Expensive though, and I think there are problems with siamesed ports.

The engine has no performance mods (yet), so perhaps I'll stick with the SUs. I'd definitely be interested in those articles if you wouldn't mind please, and possibly the air scoop too - will you post some pics when it's all on?

Get hold of a copy of "How to build & Power Tune SU carburettors" by Des Hammill. Speedpro Series, Veloce Publishing, www.veloce.co.uk. Full of usefull information. You'll be amazed what can be done to enhance performance.

The is a Veloce book on all aspects of tuning the B series "MGB 4-cylinder engines for road & track" by Peter Burgess. Lot's of usefull advice.

In period, BL Special Tuning and the MGB boys used twin 1 3/4" SUs on a suitable enlarge standard inlet manifold and then jetted/needled them to suit. The general concensus was that Webers only gave an advantage with wild cams and specialist fixed dizzies. For road/track use the SUs were a better otption.
