  • Spray job - what is a fair price.

My Sportster came to me complete and running but not painted.
Some people say that the beige gel coat looks "nice". I think it is a bit "hearing aid" so I'm considering a repaint.
Spraying is not my strongest suit so I am thinking of PAYING someone.
What is the approximate going rate for a solid colour spray over gel coat with no lacquer done by a careful practitioner who would need to do any dismantling and other prep?

    Colin.

    Hi Colin

I've forgotten where you are in the country, but a couple of members who both won Best in Show, including this year's Sportster winner in metallic black, managed to get their cars painted for around £1,500 (in notes) at a specialist paint shop in Daventry - they do F1 work as well, so their quality is repeatedly good.

    They are called Normandale Products

The Cabrio they painted had some of its panels on the chassis: the Sportster was a panel off paint job, so they will do whatever you want.

Hi Colin. The cost of a good paint job hinges mostly on how much work /preparation has to be done. If for example you can strip the car down to the individual panels it will obviously cost less than if the paint shop has to strip/ mask whatever prior to spraying. When mine was painted in 2003 it cost 1K as separate panels. The more you can do the less it will cost. David

Thanks for your replies. It is very useful to have some "Marlin specific" information. We have some good sprayers here in Herefordshire and I will be taking the car around a few of them to get some ideas. Having some figures in mind will help me avoid any too high (or low) estimates ! One idea I have is to leave the aluminium parts "natural" which may reduce the cost a bit.

Got mine done for £500 (including paint) by students at the QE2 college near Leatherhead - still looks pretty sweet nine years later..
