  • Zip it

M25 four lanes down to one but you try and merge one on one. OH no the pratt behind the lorry your trying to merge behind is glued to the back of it and leaning on his horn. Has no body heard of zip in turn/one on one? Well it was in Essex so what do you expect!!
Ben Caswell probably not the last word on anything here!!

      Re: Zip it

had a similar thing up here not so long ago - two lanes going into one - so lorries were going int eh middle of both lanes to prevent the outside lane being used even though there was 1/2 mile to go! grrrrrr

        Re: Zip it

It seems to be about the UK fixation about queueing. Seems people would prefer to make one 6mile long queue rather than a three lane two mile long queue and zipping. The one lane queue people then get angry by what they regard as "queue jumping"! I understand that in Germany (or is it the US) that you have to fill both/ all lanes and can be fined for failing to zip! I guess it would be too useful a law to apply here!

Yup it is in the states. "Zip in turn". They are so used to it that they don't often try to jump a line of cars. Because just about everyone follows the idea then stress is lower. By all means make a six mile queue a double three mile queue but this only works if everyone does zip in turn. What happens here is that either the outside lot force more than one vehicle into any gap or the inside guys get angry and close up the gaps. either way one of the three mile queues proceeds slightly faster than the other. The real secret is for all to think ahead, fill both lanes but slow down early, then zip. This way the time can be reduced. This will never work in the UK as most of our drivers do not use any SA and have low levels of self discipline compared to the average US driver. I have seen Zip in turn signs in Cornwall but the ones in Truro are generally ignored! Ho Hum!!!!
