  • need a new fuel cap

Does anyone have any suggestions for a source of locking fuel caps for a cabrio? We had a little careless moment at a services in derby so our fuel cap is somewhere on the A38 north bound.

We picked up a basic one at halfords but it would be nice to have one that locks so we might be less likely to do it again in the future. There were several locking ones but they didn't fit.

    cheers, Stephen

Hi Stephen. It may be sierra size so possibly a Ford dealer or Europa may be worth trying. regards Liz

Re: need a new fuel cap

      Hi Stephen
I have a spare one in black with key. It is not exactly the same as the original which I think is early Sierra Mark 1 where the cap was not covered by a flap.
Where are you ?, if local to Sandbach Cheshire or passing you are welcome to call in and check it will do the job.
I think I paid around £10.00 for it

Re: need a new fuel cap

        Hi Stephen
As Dave says, early Sierras had a cap not covered by a flap, so the cap fitted a recess in the body, and the Cabrio moulding was designed around this, having a recess too. Later Sierras had a flap over the cap which was at an angle. The upshot of this was that the pipe to the tank was different and wouldn't fit the geometry of the Cabrio body/tank. Anyone using a late donor may have cut off the recess and remodelled the Cabrio moulding and pipe - I know, I did!

So do you have a recess in your boot moulding? That will influence what cap is best. I have several pipes from Sierras as a result of finding what would fit, and a couple of caps which may be of use. One is an original Mark 1 Sierra with a key, yours for the cost of another key. The other is a new after market cap from Motorworld which cost 32.99 and would fit a recess but look better flush fitted. The package says it is intended for Fiesta or Escort but it fits the pipes I've got, yours for 15 pounds.

On my car, I ended up fitting a new cap and adaptor with pipe and unleaded restrictor at great expense from Europa. Probobly not the route you want to go! I'm in Bradford if it's close enough for you to come and see the bits. May be at Tatton Park at the weekend.

Re: need a new fuel cap

          Hi Dave
Just what I meant to say ! This is the one I bought off Ebay 371059052794 at £4.95 looking at it closely it is cheap and nasty but will do the job.
I bought it because I lost the original during the rear end strip down and rebuild, I looked high and low for the original unable to find so I bought this one. A few days after buying it I found the original which I had put safely away.
          Regards

Firstly thanks for the history re sierras. At least I've learnt something from this mistake. I've got a cardio with a recess but the donor was a J reg so I guess I should have closer look to see how the builder sorted the pipe geometry.

Dave Clutterbuck, thank you for the offer but Cheshire is a bit out of my way so I'll have to pass on that one.

Dave Kitson, I'll be up in Bradford on the 23rd and 24th August. Would you be free on either of those days in the morning for me to pop round?

Its good to see a Cabrio owner getting a new heart.
