I'm wondering what the regulations are when taking a car that's been off the road for an MoT? Is it legal to drive ot to the garage with insurance but no tax?

yes but I believe you have to pre-book the mot with the station. You can also drive it to a garage to have repairs done if the car doesn't have an mot (but is taxed & insured).

there is a caveat...should plod stop you and find that, say, your tyres are bald then you will be done for having an unroadworthy car in any respect.
