First MOT

Does anyone know the rules regarding the first MOT for a kit car.

My Sportster went through its IVA on the 5th June last year. It was first registered and put on the road on the 1st July 2013.

I re-taxed it on-line for the 1st July this year and the MOT status check that the website came back with was OK, allowing me to buy the tax.

So do I only need an MOT 3 years after the date of first registration as with a brand new car or was there simply a hiccup in the on-line taxing process.

Having said that, an annual independent check of the car has to be worthwhile and I'll put it through an MOT over the winter.

But I haven't found anywhere on any of the DVLA / Gov websites that gives me a definitive answer. Has anyone had a more successful search than me??

You should find some info here or there though its more to do with Classics than Kits.
The site only has a few more days before it is closed down.

As I understand it, the MOT is due three years after first registration. This includes cars which have passed an IVA so no MOT for three years.

No MOT required for my Cabrio for 3 years after registration/IVA.
BTW when I tried to find out after the first year I phoned VOSA to see if it should be MOTed. After a lot of messing around I was told I should talk to DVLA and was transferred to them. DLVA didn't have a clue either and tried to transfer me back to VOSA. So I went to visit local plod, who phoned VOSA, and they were transferred to DVLA and they gave up too. So I relied on the computer output when the tax reminded came through to determine if I needed and MOT. It didn't until year 3.

Interesting stuff...............

So, anecdotally, an MOT three years after the date of first registration seems to be the requirement.

But, what would be the view of an insurance company, always looking for a way to avoid paying a claim.

'L' Reg. 1994 plate. Of course it needs an MOT!! Unless you can prove otherwise.

It may be worth asking the question.

yes interesting point. I would have guessed that the insurance database would be the same as the dvla one? definitely worth a quick check - the specialist brokers should know shouldnt they?

Age determined by the number plate does not infer the age of the car. Loads of personalised number plates on new cars. They only need MOTs 3 years after date of registration. The only rule about that is you can not put a plate on a car that makes it seem newer than it is.

When I insured JRR DVLA had it as a 2 door 4 seat Vitesse. I pointed out that it had been insured for some years, about 30, as a Triumph Vitesse Special.
I'm sure it would cause their number recognition camera some indigestion when they try to match the car with a Vitesse!!!!

I had the same concern with a Cabrio. I asked DVLA and VOSA, VOSA did tell me if the kit car was registered factory built as a complete car with 100% new components and given a new current registration it needed a mot when it is 3yrs old. If the car was built with any used components and even factory built and was registered from a donor car or given a Q reg it needed a mot very year from 1st registered.

See - they don't even know their own rules.
The telling factor is when you get you renewal notice it will explicitly say 'A MOT is required for this vehicle' for the first 2 years after registration it did not but at the end of the 3rd year it did. Your log book will show the date of registration, regardless of the year on the number plate, as mine was a 'G'.

When I built mine the DVLA inspector looked it over, remember this was back in 1990, and since I'd used engine ,front and rear suspension,gearbox and transmission,was given the origional P reg of the donor. I just looked in the V5 and the date of reg in my name is given as 1976 i.e P reg.
