The front and back pipe are knackered on my car - where do people get replacements from? I know YKC offer them, but last check it was up at ?130 for the front section in stainless steel...

I'd be interested in this too, I had to have a new silencer for the MOT this year, and the one that got fitted makes the car sound awful (used to have MK2 Cavelier SRi tailbox which sounded great!)

I was quoted something like ?450 for full custom stainless system including manifold - way too much for an exhaust me thinks....

Recently replaced mine after 20 years on my 4 cyl Triumph / Marina based Hybrid, a stainless 4:2:1 downpipe from Canley Classics (much more efficient than orginal cast item - purchased a while ago & can't remember cost) into steel 2" round bullet expansion box into a bit of 2" pipe followed by a couple of 90 deg bends then into a 300mm oval silencer (all pipe / bends / silencers bought from Merlin Motorsport) + some time spent with a MIG to stick it all together. Only expensive item was the downpipe, the rest cost about ?80. Should last another 20 years - or at least until fossil fuels run out !!!!.

The bullet expansion box looks a bit like the old "cherry bomb" used to, it provides an additionl bit of silencing before the main silencer which as it's fairly small (300mm - to fit behind rear axle) wasn't quite enough on its own. Total cost was probably about ?250 with the stainless 4:2:1 downpipe (not including the time spent of course), so I guess your ?320 isn't too bad - is that stainless throughout ?

Sounds a bit pricey for a side exit job, as you say there isn't much to it.

Have you tried custom chrome. I bought a lovely polished stainless silencer from them at Stoneleigh. They chucked in a 2 in 1 and some pipe all for ?90.
Also try longlife exhausts. We have a branch in Bristol and quoted me ?450 for a full side exit system including tubular manifold for the Fiat twin cam. They know what they are doing as well. He could balance the system for me depending on what engine characteristics I wanted ie. low down torque or high end acceleration. Never underestimate the importance of a well balanced system to get the most from your engine. Someone who knows what they are doing can get another 5 - 10 bhp from your 1800 Marina lump.

Interesting post, I must look up those sites. I was at Longlife in Cardiff on Friday for an exhaust quote for my Fiat twink. They quoted ?480 just for the twin downpipes and stainless junction box into my existing YKC stainless silencer. ( YKC put on some rusty old bits that look dreadful and exit under the chassis rail, so also reducing my ground clearance.)
Note this is without the tubular manifold in your Bristol quote, I thought it was way OTT now I know it was!

Don at YKC is missing a pattern for the TC downpipe - if you could get your rusty bits apart without trashing them how about sending it to him (or me)? I'm after a downpipe and his quote was pretty reasonable...just over the ?100 mark (plus the dreaded of course)...I'd be happy to cover postage costs of course.

I recently bought a Motor Cycle Muffler from a chap, second hand but in very good condition. I plan on fixing this to the remainder of my exhaust! Creating the perfect side exit. (sounds mint to) Graham P.S. I tried the above on my first car also, Silencer taken from a Bandit SE and made to fit a 900cc Fiat Cinquecento.

Think you are addressing me rather than Stefan.
The twin downpipe I used was bought as an Argenta spare from my local Motor Factor. I just checked with them and they say it is still listed in the Timax catalogue as part number FT 100P, they say that the Timax stockist is Chester Exhausts on 01244 379279.
Let me know how you get on, I might need another myself sometime!

Either way, my plans have changed somewhat after getting soaking wet since the roof leaked badly in the recent rain - I'm going to pick up a winter car in the coming weeks and fix the "problems" at a lesuirely pace rather than a "oh bugger, how am I going to get to work" one
