  • stiff 2nd gear mk1 2.0

    Hi all,
As iv only had the marlin a couple of weeks my plans (sure we all have these) are to sort a new interior and paint etc, one thing bothering me is 2nd gear, their is no unusual noise from the box but it can be a mission to get 2nd to slip in especially when on the beans. Is their something simple like an oil change that may solve this or is it a rebuild.
    Thanks
Ps going to send for the tech tips manual !

You cant rush the Triumph box at the best of times probably the synchro ring is a bit tired but that means rebuilding the box If its not making noises I would try and live with it for a while. If the car has overdrive don't use additives in the oil....If you are having trouble finding the gears rebuilding the remote gear change may improve things a bit.

I would certainly do an oil change with OE spec oil. A build up of microscopic "wear" material in used oil will only tend to worsen the synchro cones ability to grip the cones on the gears.

Great thanks guys, I'll do an oil change on the box and see how that goes what oil would you recommend

Not familiar with the Triumph stuff but in principle I would go for whatever oil was originally specified for the car that the gearbox came from.

Try to find a GL4 90ep(Castrol Classic) as there is an opinion that the later GL5 attacks the bronze parts(synchro rings) difficult to prove as replacement rings seem to be inferior quality anyway.
