  • Fuel Sender

So after having the Marlin off the road for a while replacing the fuel tank, replacing a caliper and replacing the brake servo. I think that counts as things running in 3's. I am pleased to say that the brake system is working really well. The new fuel tank however I have an issue with.

The sender unit on the old tank had screws holding it in place. The new tank has a twist lock fitting. The problem is that it leaks fuel out of the sender unit. I deliberately filled the tank fairly full as I was a bit suspicious of the fitting. As you can see I have resorted to using quite a lot of blue Halymor to try and seal it but this has not worked. I have removed the sender a couple times to check I have fitted it well. It came with a rubber washer which looks OK. As you twist the outer ring it has a downward grove on it which is supposed to lock it in place. Although it feels tight when I have twisted it, it obviously isn't doing it's job properly.

    Any advice much appreciated.

What tank & which sender...and where's the fuel pickup..?
Original Roadster spec was Ford Escort van/estate Mk1/2 tank & sender...I don't recognise the sender...and the standard Ford sender is a one-piece unit that incorporates the fuel pickup pipe as well.
I can recall numerous battles to get the Ford unit to lock down securely against the thick rubber grommet (a twist lock as you describe)...but once you get it in it is fuel-tight.

      Hi Dan,
If it was me I would try to get a new gasket as a first step.
There is a mark at about 10 o’clock in your picture I assume that is a scratch but it does look like it might be a crack.

Thanks for the advice so far. I will try and re-seat the circular locking ring. I is pretty awkward. I used a screw drive to push the clip around. Don't know if there is a better method. The unit has got a couple of surface scratches on it but the rubber gasket is below the locking ring. I think as I said I will clean it up again and have another go.
