    Pinto Manifold

Any one know whats the best fit 4-2-1 exhaust manifold for a 2.1 SOHC sierra Berlinetta ? Capri, Escort RS2000, Cortina?

I don't want to take a guess and find that it fouls the engine mount or footwell so i thought i'd dip a toe into our vast pool of knowledge.

    Re: Pinto Manifold

I had one on my 2.0L Pinto and it cracked. bought a new one (at a good price) from a member on this forum as it was for the same engine and looked identical. It was and it fitted well to engine and o fouling only the point where it connected to the exhaust was still angled downwards as opposed to parallel with the ground which it needed to be at that point to connect to the exhaust so some cut and weld was needed. So moral of story is not all 421 are identical. If you have one fitted try and find the identical make. If you don't check the angles and connection points to exhaust. Also I eventually I had a custom exhaust fitted with a flexi as rigidity is what manifold cracked in first place.

Hi Jason, The short answer is none of them . They all need tweaking in one way or another, best to get one custom made.

the standard cast manifold is quite a good one if you get the later twin pipe one and it takes up little room - when looking at a 4-2-1 or similar check the pipe from cylinder 4 wont be fouling on the steering coupling.

I have a standard RS2000 one fitted to my roadster. I have to cut about 1" out of the head end of the headers so that it would clear the stearing column. Then I cut the end off it and fitted a large diameter pip to match the exhaust, I think its 2 1/2" pipe.

I have a RS2000 manifold on my 2.1 litre pinto. The two downpipes exit through the side of the engine bay and feed a silencer under the running board. A few curves but fairly straightforward to manufacture.

Thanks folks. the car has the twin down pipe cast manifold already, not sure what it was off. It fits well but i am keen to get the engine breathing more freely and was looking at perhaps fitting the RS 2000 cast manifold, if there would be any gains to be had, unless there was a 4-2-1 that was a known fit. I've just fitted bike carbs and will start looking at mild road cams shortly as i'm looking for livelier performance.

When I replaced my cracked 421 I was surprised to find the gaskets had been badly aligned and thus were restricting air flow - maybe worth checking on your cast one you never know extra flow maybe there for free.

here is picture that dark lip was about 5mm at it widest I would say 10% area restricted

The twin down pipe cast manifold is from the Sierra. The RS cast mk2 escort (ribbed) manifold will be the best of these cast jobs.

Alan I nearly made this mistake when I was about to fit the RS2000 manifold. There seem to be at least two sizes of those pesky gaskets. I bit the bullet and bought the correct (larger) ones from Burton Power.

Point note -I had to get the manifold fitted by the garage in the village as I was away on business - They are good and I am sure they checked (I think I did but cant recall now). I may drop one out to double check.

I have seen engines in the past (can't remember if the Pinto was one of them) where you can fit the gaskets on the studs either way around. However one way is correct and the other (wrong) way can produce a mismatch with the port like you describe. Peter.

I don't know if you are aware, but pinto exhaust gaskets are 2.3.4 the same, no1 completely different, hope this is of use.

It is interesting to learn these details - but now I have to check all 4 - best make allowance for a full morning job then!!

I would not worry Alan, the photo on your thread is the gasket from no1, and could not be fitted to 2,3,or4, and vice verca.
