  • Triumph mk 1 roadster unregistered

Hi all question opinions on the viability of taking on the build of a half finished kit and getting it through the test ,the car will be cut up if not bought.

The component parts are probably worth more dismantled.
Sad but true, even previously registered cars are going the same way, being broken up.
I think the financial investment in modifying the chassis and body to meet the current regs is just too great.

Perhaps true but it ignores the hobby aspect.
Plenty of us invest time & money in cars (classic or otherwise) with no expectation of profit...think heritage-shelled MG's...£10k plus for the shell, c£20k all-in for a full resto and little chance of recouping that in full afterwards.
Sometimes the doing in itself is sufficient justification for the spend...and in this example it's merely difficult, not impossible.

I do not deny the hobby aspect, but in the case of incomplete Triumph based cars 30 years of sitting in a garage, stagnant, with critical milestones of IVA, SVA etc being missed. It's only those with time, financial resources, good structural welding skills etc that can tackle such a beast.
Surely it's better to take a registered car and improve on it to modern standards, at least that way you get to drive it after each upgrade.

Some of us are insane enough to do it . I have enough toys or I would have a go. If the original V5 exists can't it be registered as a rebody?

Not wanting to condone illegal activity, with a much simpler chassis number location and fixing, anything is possible.

The difficulty might arise in the DVLA records. Something that has not been discussed yet. A car that has been off road for a long period would arouse suspicion, it may have even fallen off the records or have been built from a written off donor? The DVLA have been known to try and claim back tax, if the car was never SORN, so a DVLA search would be critical.
You will then run the risk of coming across an overzealous plod, most Triumph models are still on the road, and Marinas got a lot of publicity through Top Gear so it might be spotted easily. In my book too great a risk, because at a stroke the car could be instantly worthless.

Have to agree with Steve's comments regarding kit cars that are not what they have on the V5 . There was some talk about MOT stations not doing the test if the car had say Truimph Herald on the previous MOT when it is clearly not.. Same for the Police they see a strange car - put the reg in the computer and up comes Truimph Herald/ Morris Marina when clearly it isn't..
