  • Type 9 clutch cable

Those of you with a type 9 gearbox: what clutch cable do you use and what is the arrangement at the pedal box?

I've no history of the build for my car but from googling it looks to be an Escort/ Cortina/ Capri one. Tried my local motor factors but whilst they were really helpful the puzzled looks suggested it's a bit before their time!

At the pedal the original fitting has been cut off and the cable doubled back and formed into a loop with cable clamps. A plate with a hole in it and a bit of tube welded on has been bolted to the pedal box in the engine bay to locate the plastic/ rubber bung affair at the end of the outer cable.

I'll take a picture of min tonight. It certainly has the same metal plate affair mounted to the peddle box. I think I may have had a custom one from Speedy Cables.

Have a look at Burton Power website. There are pictures of various cables. On my Berli with type 9 I have used one from an early Cortina which has an eye at the pedal and a threaded adjuster at the clutch end.

Mine sounds the same as Scott's. I had YKC modify my Marina clutch pedal by welding a piece on top to accept the eye of the cable. They also supplied a plate and guide to fit the pedal box although I seem to remember modifying it a bit myself to fit.

Thanks chaps. Had a look at the Burton Power site and that confirms my thoughts that it's an Escort/ Cortina type, albeit mine is missing the pedal eye. They come in various lengths and I wonder if anyone knows which is the right one? If not I'll take mine off and measure it but the thought of undoing the four cable clamps in the confines of the footwell fills me with dread.

The length is going to depends on what it needs to go around. Mine has to loop around the 4-2-1 manifold so it could do with being a bit longer.

If you look in my build diary "Berlinetta build and restoration" page 13 you will see how I fitted the clutch cable.
