I do need a new alternator too... Charged up the existing battery, voltage showed 14.2v. Started up, voltage showed 12.8v and on rev there was no noticeable voltage boost. I have little faith in sourcing a new one after the hassle of hunting a new starter motor for the car - so instead I'm going straight down the repair / overhaul road. Found a specialist place in Glasgow & I'm virtually passing by them tomorrow morning so I'll remove it first thing & drop it off with them. Hopefully all will be well & I'll pick it up next week & once more the car will be on the road!

You might try fitting a new regulator in the alternator first, a lot cheaper, and usually does the trick if the old one seems burnt through
