Thats a Mk2 Rack. Clive needs a Mk1 unless he swaps out the mounts as explained in my article.

The eBay item suggests a Mk3 but I have never seen one specific to a Mk3 the last ones manufactured for the Marina and Ital were all Mk2 design.

Thanks guys for the words of support. I will fight my own battles though and will continue to contribute with as much accurate researched and documented information that I can. Not so easy to put parts in your hand when I am in Spain, but others can help.

But it remains irritating, when good information is in the public domain, and the hours of work that it takes, is apparently ignored or overlooked.

The bottom line of this thread is that accident damage can be repaired with the correct parts or an adaptation can be made to fit similar parts. Added to that the possibility of a twisted upright, that has been identified as an issue in two previous cases where the length of the rack was questioned, has been reinforced.

Incidentally more people have downloaded the relevant document and learned a little more accurate information that they can share with others.

I am amazed at the responses at just a simple question.

Maybe someone has just read to much into it.

I can't see how this could be misconstrued as a dig at another member.

I totally agree Nick, Without his input and support I would not have attempted to fit MGF rear discs to my roadster. He has helped me in numerous other ways too. I too am surprised he keeps renewing. I am not saying other members have not been a help, they most certainly have , but cut him some slack chaps.

I really am 100% behind Steve on this. I am shocked that many of the apparent regular posters spend so much time ignoring his advice, something I have always valued. Yet here we are again, where accurate information is essential and the likes of Listerjp2 trolls Steves contribution as if he has something better to say, but clearly hasn't. No wonder irritation sets in.

Is it because Steve posts documents on Keepandshare and not directly on this forum? That criticism seems asinine to me. Any accurate information whatever it's source has a great value to Marlin Roadster owners as well as Marina owners and all the other kits that used the Marina as a donor, so publishing in one central location, where access is not limited by restrictive membership rules is sensible, reaching a far greater audience than a club of around 600 members, only about a third of whom seem to be active.

If you think that you can do better than Steve, then why not spend some time, like he clearly has, preparing your own data sheets, rather than just shooting the messenger.

This sort of behaviour towards someone who clearly contributes massively to the Marina Roadster owners, is one of the reasons that I have not joined the MOC. My personal conversations with Steve have always been cordial and informative.

People with a progressive idea for the MOC are often shot down, rather than appreciated for their unsung efforts supporting the membership and their desire to take the club forward. It must be that there is a certain amount of chagrin amongst the 'old school' members, that Steve remains a member of the MOC. I am occasionally surprised that he renews every year. I hope that for the benefit of the MOC he continues to contribute.

That is unless there is someone else who can offer the same level of technical advice on Marina based cars within the MOC, but I don't think there is.

If you took the time to read, you would learn that the rack had already been identified as a Mk1. Presumably you also took the time to read the article that I linked to, so you would know how the rack was identified.

Yes I do get irritated by repeated questioning without substantial evidence. But I take solace in the fact that each time, I get more visitors to my keepandshare archive, (link in my signature below) meaning that more people learn about the nuances of a Marina based roadster, than they do from searching this forum, the search engine of which is acknowledged to be less than helpful by the experts.

You suggested checking part numbers, but failed to indicate what the different part numbers were. Incomplete advice, in my opinion is worse than no advice at all, as it wastes everybody's time.

You don't need a part number to identify the racks, a Mk1 eyeball is perfect for the job, no need for a tape measure or part number as I have documented everything needed. my link includes all the info.
Equally an Escort steering rack bush is not a direct replacement for the Marina item, whether or not it's a Mk1 or Mk2 rack, Escort or Marina, there is no similarity apart from the function.
I spent a long time researching the relevant differences, and much like the recent posts about Marina brake discs, if you want to duplicate and confirm my findings, but if you want to waste your time, that's fine by me.
If however, you find an error in my conclusions, please highlight the specific case and provide the necessary data to prove your point.

I ve had a prang today and need a new steering rack. They appear to come in two lengths. Any thoughts on how to pick the right one.

Buying a recon steering rack is like playing the lottery. The bushes that regularly fail are hard to find indicating that only a few have a reliable source.
If you can find a NOS genuinely NOS then buy it whether it's a Mk1 or a Mk2, the mounting brackets should be easy to find, and it may save you replacing the Rack twice!
